U.S.S. Missouri circa 1976

My first duty station after returning to the world was the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton WA.

This is the Mighty Mo as she looked in1976. She was still mothballed in her Korean War configuration. If I remember correctly, she was refitted shortly after I took these.

She was open for tours in a very restricted way. Some activist group staged a sit in about a month or so before I reported aboard. We got free run of wherever we could get to though.

Kinda old and some scanned funky but hey a reference is a reference right?

Pretty neat photos there! I wish I had brought my camera along when they brought USS New Jersey here to Long Beach for her rebuild in 82. She was opened for a partial tour for one weekend prior to the work commencing on her modernization refit.

The best thing about my job up there was I had alot of spare time. We had free run of the shipyards and toured all the old places where the BB’s were built, and fitted out. I’m trying to find the photo of the forklift that was used to carry the 16" barrels to the ship from the shop. The darn thing was massive, at least 30’ tall, and capable of moving two barrels at one time. Sailors had to start her up once a week and drive around. It was eventually used again in the refits of the BB’s.

Any old seadogs remember that one?
