U.S. Navy Fighter Colors in the Pacific

What are the correct colors for a U.S. Navy fighter in the Pacific prior to September 1943? Were they assigned an ANA number?

The aircraft I’m interested in looks like it’s some sort of medium blue (?) with white (?) under surfaces. I’m reasonably knowledable on Army aircraft but pretty ignorant on the Navy data.

Can anyone recommend a paint manufacturer of the correct paint color? Thanks.

I like the Testor’s Model Master Intermediate Blue for those birds in that era… FS number is 35164… Not sure of the ANA number…

Hans,

Thanks. Any thoughts about the underside color? Was it really white?

Undersides were ANA 601, Insignia White (FS37880).

Upper side of Wings were ANA606, Semi Gloss Sea Blue (FS 25042).

Fuselage sides were ANA 608, Intermediate Blue (FS35164).

Fuselage upper surfaces were ANA 607, Non Specular Sea Blue (FS 35042).

Regards, Rick

Ahh… I was thinking 1942, not 43… Brain-cramp…

In Sept 43 you would see a combnation of two factory color schemes operational on PTO fighters. Older aircraft would be in the Blue Gray (ANA 603) over Light Gray (ANA 602) scheme that had first started to be applied in Oct 1941. New production aircraft would be arriving in theater in the new Tri Color scheme of Sea Blue/Intermediate Bue over Insignia White. Some older production aircraft recieved field applied schemes adding Sea Blue to the upper surfaces of the Blue Gray/Gray scheme and possibly the White lowers as well. Testors and Polly Scale make all the appropriate colors in their lines.
