U.S. M21 81MM Mortar Carrier

Hey everyone. I just go the Tamiya U.S. 81MM Mortar Carrier M21. I was wondering what the advantages are of firing inside the truck, or ourside it? What I can tell, the advantages of firing inside it are the ammo supplie is close, and small arms protection, but wouldn’t they pull back if the were in small arms range? Also, When firing from inside it, would the driver still be in the cockpit, and would the window covers and back hatch be opened?
Thanks,
Mike

an 81mm is a big piece of equipment, and it might have a longer range than a smaller size…hence it is easier to move this thing in a vehicle to give mobile ness to the mortar
i should think that the driver is not driving or waiting to drive while firing
also, the box shows the men firing it outside the track-so maybe it was only for mobility of the systme?

Hello there,
I just got out of the army, and what are the odds that I was a mortar. Mobility with all ammo and computers is the only reason. I was airborne/light infantry. We humped our stuff.

Thanks for the replys. The cover of the box has them otuside of it, but other pictures show them inside it. The reason I asked about the driver being seated, was the directions have him seated, and the mortar team firing from inside the vehicle, which I though was strange, and might just be for the sake of direction.
Thanks again,
Mike
