U.S. insignia on both wings of P-47?

I am currently putting the decals on my Tamiya P-47D “Razorback” and noticed the underside of the wings has the insignia on both sides. This model is from the time period of March 1944. Is this correct? I couldnt find anything in the net about it. Thanks.

I found a few sites for you… hopefully it will help. Looks like both sides might be correct.

Good luck.

thanks!

It was non-standard, but several aircraft carried them to help avoid freindly fire incidents.

It was actually standard in the ETO. All P-47 had a insignia added under the left wing usually 55 or 60 inch diameter, the right wing sometimes still had the 40 inch insignia though many were increased to the 55 or 60 inch.

Though there is always an exception to the rule and a few P-47’s have been seen without any insignia under the left wing in the ETO.

What colour scheme are you doing?

The best way is to take a reference on the aircraft’s wartime photo. If not available, may guess according to the P47 in the same squadron and date.
