Guys: I’m about to start my Stuka Zu Fuss for the 251 GB and as I look forward to the upcoming events (AMPS Nationals, IPMS Nationals, etc…) I was trying to schedule my builds and see how fast/slow I need to work to get projects complete in an “enjoyable” amount of time and be ready for the events. I’m thinking the Stuka will take a month to build and another month to weather it…how long do you guys take? No speed contest, just curious to know what pace we all like/try to work.
Until celestial trumpets sound, a bright light shines, and a booming voice declareth, “Thy work is DONE!”
Either that, or til it looks right?
Beyond that, there’s no standard rate…
I’m probably “A” typical of most of the guys. I work between 15 and 30 minutes a day on a project. I’m able to leave it out on the bench and most of the time the only treaspasser is the cat and he mostly leaves to bench alone. Having said that I’m notorious for building, but not finishing. When I build for a show I try to get started at least three months out. My job tends to interfere with my hobbies. That’s my story and I’m stickin to it (for now).
For armor it takes me upwards of three or four months to finish one build. However it all depends if I’m in the modeling mood or not. If I feel like building quicker I can or if I feel lazy I’ll procrastinate construction. [:-^]…I’m more of a procrastinator.[;)]
Little bits of time here and there, rarely more the 30-40 minutes on an evening,I don’t rush,I like to get value on my entertainment dollar.
The DML Panther-D I am currently working on now has been going since December 1 2008,but the tank is just about done, but I am adding five figures.
Average kit 1/35 armor 4-6 weeks
1/48 armor 2-3 weeks
1/48 planes or jets 4-5 weeks
1/350 ships 6-8 weeks
at my pace
In the summer i usually get a kit out every two to three weeks because i have no school. In the winter it can wacko with homework and such so much more varied.
Usually 15-20 hrs for a OTB, which is pretty much the way all my kits will be from now on. Detail and Accuracy be d…ed. I’m going for quantity baby! I started the Dragon Sdkfz 251/17, the one with the funky angle sides last Tues. and am doing the finial weathering on it now. I didn’t even work on it this weekend. I stay focused on only one at a time. Of course I do have this little 1/700th scale Baltimore heavy crusier that is taking a while, mainly due to the masking for the splinter camoflage pattern. Building the thing didn’t take long at all, I just hate masking.

I usually spend a couple of weeks per build. Most of the time is spent doing ‘all-nighters’ on my off nights from work.I love being in the dungeon after dark.
Pending the work schedule I average about a kit a month, but this can vary depending on how emotionally wrapped up I get in a given subject. My M3 Grant took three weeks because I had some free time and I was really into seeing it through. My Fairey Swordfish is comin along nicely for the same reason. I do have a couple shelf queens that are languishing after a year or more, because I lost intrest in the subject.
It all depends on the subject. A simple OOB build with a monotone scheme and light weathering can be done in a couple months for me lately (depending on weather, family, and work life). But so many projects I start I want to trick out along the way, not to mention hitting snags as the happen… 3 months or more. Probably another reason I have several kits going at once.
As a total armor newb I cannot begin to say. I’ve been “practising” on the older less complicated kits. Learning new methods of construction and finishing. The current wip is almost too simple, OOB sorta, and will be a test bed for some painting techniques I want to try.
I spend as much time as I want when I want until I’m happy. When the mood strikes is when I build.
I have spent as much as six months on a project (car) and as little as one day (bust).
Normal chronological time for me is 4-6 weeks. I work one project at a time, mostly on the weekends when I can get reliable blocks of time to focus and get “in the groove”. I kept a time log on my latest project and was pleasantly surprised to find out that it took me 71.5 hours of total actual work time (not counting time waiting for things to dry or set up) to complete it.
It has taken me anywhere from two weeks, BA20 armored car, to a year, the Bridge dio, to finish a project.
The only things that cut into my build time are work and sleep. Way to much of one and not enough of the other[sigh].
Never measured by calendar… Typical armor build is around 10-15 hours if I don’t scratch an interior or have any major battle-damage to model…
It is dependent on the complexity of the build and the time available but anywhere from 2 to 5 months including the base. I would say 75 to 200 hours for 1/35 scale armor.
This in some cases is meaningless…look at Biffa. He’s faster than GM. Or Bill…his Gantt chart has no slack[;)]
As for Doog…well even he does not know as he uses “the force”

Mike,
I think in Doog’s case it’s more influence of the “hair” vs. the “force”! Can’t tolerate any slack when there’s 72 more waiting in the stash for their time on the bench! [;)]
As far as Doog…we may both be right. His hair may be an antenna for the force!!
As for your tolerance of slack…I have a similar problem with the stash. Too many line items and as a group going out to infinity[:O]

Guys: It’s fun reading your replies…from them I’ve determined I’m average…to fast!..don’t tell my wife[;)]! My T34/85 (just completed) took me about 3 weeks total. I get so wrapped up in them once I get to the weathering I’m like panzerguy…work, sleep, life get in the way (oh, and drying time)…I will sit down around 9:00 PM and then look up at the clock and go, “WHOA[:O], it’s midnight already!”
