Greetings
I am primarily a 120mm figure modeller but need some help! My wife in a moment of brilliance nipped out and bought me the Tamiya 1/16 scale Afrika Korps Type 82 Kubelwagen with driver figure and wait for it… a superbly cast figure of Rommel! I have managed to find a lot of refernce pics on which to base my build but I haven’t managed to find any detailed pictures of the motor. If anyone out there could help me with this or direct me to where I can get them, it would be greatly appreciated! I want to do the motor justice as in this scale, you can imagine how detailed it is! I want to add all the wiring and spark plug leads etc but need some pics to get it spot on!
Please Help!!!
Regards
Arthur

here is another motor, its a little difficult to understand, but its the only i can get.
Hi Arthur Here’s a link to an online photo walkaround: http://cybermodeler/armor/kubel/kubel.shtml I hope it’s helpful. If you want a good resource there are some good publications out there in soft cover (try Schiffler books) that a lot more in depth. Cheers! Eric
Geesh! Thanks guys! The pics are definately helpful and the walk around as well. I will also look into the books from Schiffer. I noticed that they are on Squadron for about $10 a piece (part 1 & 2) Times that by about seven and add 30% and then you can work out roughly what it will cost me here in South Africa! I will keep you guys updated once the build begins. I first have to finish my Fallschirmjager!

Arthur
aah, i love that guys. show me a photo of it, please.
Now we are talking my subject! [swg]
I’m a beetleowner, and a huge ww2 volkswagen-nut!
Here are some pics of the engine:

The top pics show an engine fitted with a ‘tropenfilter’ aircleaner as used in africa (and some parts of russia)
The bottom pic shows the standard aircleaner used (sometimes used in africa as well)
Feel free to contact me if you need any more info [;)]

Hi Jon
Thanks for the links. These will really help me in getting that motor spot on. Much appreciated!

Arthur
Hi Jan
wow! Those are really detailed pics. Thanks for the info on the ‘tropenfilter’. It looks like Tmiya have gone for the standard air cleaner on their kit. I will still decide if it is worth converting it to make it look more authentic! I really appreciate the pics. Do you own a Kubel? If you do, you are indeed fortunate! I will contact you should i need more info. Thanks for the invite.

Arthur
Your most welcome Arthur [;)]
I own a 1973 beetle (which is for sale now, as it is a handfull to maintain [:(] ) but there are several KdF, kübel- and schwimmwagens still up and running at beetle meetings. I made the bottom pic at such a meeting in Holland. Top pics are made by a friend at a commemerative parade for the liberation of Holland (may 5).
Like i said, if you need any more, just let me know.
Cheers, Jan [:)]
Hi Jan
thanks once again for the info. I cam across this site totally dedicated to the kubel. It is owned by a fanatic that actually restored his kubel to its original WWII condition. There are also lots of other goodies to check out and a cool online gallery. here is the link:

I too used to drive a 1970 1300 beetle when I was studying back in 1988. I eventually sold the damn thing as it was also costing me a ton to maintain it. I used to stop at the petrol station and used to tell the attendant to fill up the oil and check the petrol! Seriously though, it was a great little car and if cars could talk, boy would she have a few stories to tell! I am actually sorry that I got rid of her as she could have become a restoring project. But as they say - no regrets!
Keep Well

Hi Arthur,
I knew that one already [;)]
There is lots of info on the old bugs and buckets on the net. If you like to build more VW based vehicles, try and find ‘the modelers guide to the kübelwagen’ by MMIR. It has got tons of info, and shows you several kits and conversions on this subject.
Cheers, Jan [:)]
Thanks Jan. I will try and check it out.

Hi Martin
if you want to see pics of the kubelwagen, you’re going to have to hang in there as I haven’t even begun yet! I’m still doing my research and gathering as much info as possible. Once the build begins I will definately post some pics. If it’s the fallschirmjager you want to see, watch this space as I am about 70% complete. It’s a 1/16 scale kit depicting a fallschirmjager in 1943 from Gran Sasso when they rescued Mussolini. I shall keep you posted
