Two dioramas completed [pics]

Hi all,

Heres another two dio’s to have a look at, fairly simple to make.

The 1/72nd Matchbox Wellesley diorama.

The other dio’ is the old 1/72nd frog whitley bomber with aftermarket decals on a ‘lollie pop’, i also used the airfix recovery set in both dio’s.

The Frog Whitworth Whitley diorama.

Thanks for looking

They both look great. I really like how you did the tarmac. Nice dividing lines and a natural look. Good job.

[#ditto]Agreed! A very noce job with something we don’t see a lot of here-airplanes!

Lookin’ good! [8D][tup]

Very nice pair Ian.

Nice to see some old Matchbox and Frog kits get a new lease of life. My Dad used to build Frog kits when he was in his teens (he’s 60 now!) and Matchbox were all I built in my teens (37 now). Look forward to seeing some more.

Nice job Ian. The planes and trucks look great. Like everyone else said, that tarmac is very very nicely done. They look great!

Ditto to whats been said. Most Dio’s we see are Armour, i hope to be getting some aircraft ones up soon. Would love to know how you did the tarmac. And have you just used a picture fram to put around your board.

The tarmac is actually representing contrete hard standings as found on many former RAF bomber bases and still can be seen today [8D]

The squares of concrete are 1mm card which is then cut into the correct sizes/scales,then i put them all together like a jigsaw but leaving a very tiny gap between each part.

Which are all glued down with PVA glue.

I then painted the squares a concrete colour, then just before the paint was totally dry i used pastels along the edges, like you se for real. The cracks are just penciled in,cracks in concrete was usually caused by the aircraft cutting over the corners.

After i’m happy with the result i then apply the fake grass and rub a dirt coloured pastel to the edges to give it a muddy effect.

The frame IS just you good old picture frames. [;)]

I’m trying to remember if i ever put pictures of my dio of a lancaster being serviced/fueled up in this dio’ theres also a control tower/hanger and other stuff ! i’ll get it out and take a couple of pictures of it.

‘‘i thought i did ! way back in 2006’’,can’t get the link to work just copy and paste the thing…

thanks.

Kudos for the work you did on the tarmac and the birds… However, I got a couple things to point out to you, minor details, that’s all…

One: The right wing is outside the frame of the dio, and Two: There’re no tire tracks in the grass from the truck & trailer…

Maybe it was summer [:D] looking at it now i should get a pencil and rub indentations as if the grass was flattened where the queen mary had travaled [:)]

I recall reading an article, i believe it was in one of those ‘how to do dio books’, which suggested something similar to what you have doen. I like your results. One suggestion i might make that i recall from the book and that i have seen on the real thing is applying tar in between the concrete sections. I beleieve the suggested method was to leave a small gap between the different section and apply a thin strip of oil paint out of a tube. You then add your pastels as you have done. I haven’t tried it myself yet, but i am going to give it a go.

Apart from what Hans said about the wheel marks in the grass for the Queen mary, you might also want to add tire marks and stans to the concrete.

A much better option from my point of view, for modern concrete is to use dark carboard, slice it thinly and apply it sideways between the concrete slabs.

Very nice on both, i really like how you did the layouts.

Woo Wee! Ian is back! gonna be a good year! [bow] This Guy is a master at British Bombers!
