Find out by joining a Group hug Build

Well, that group build sounds mighty interesting. As far as the best twin-engined fighter, I would have to say the McDonnell-Douglas F-15 Eagle. A kill ratio of about 100 to none is pretty darned awesome in my opinion. Doesn’t mean that it’s my favorite, though. My favorite is the Grumman F7F Tigercat.
I’m a BIG fan of the P-38 myself…
One-O-Wonderful for me, although the Phabulous Phantom is up there too.
The true DESTROYER that succeeded where others failed! Soooo many nations fielded their best attempts at creating such an airplane but it was America’s “Kelly” Johnson and his radical design that took the cake!
The mighty Lightning! Gun platform extraordinaire! Quick, armed to the teeth and tough as nails too!
It’s the P-38, boys! Theee BEST!
My dad flew P38s until the group transitioned to Mustangs in ‘44 (55th FG)… Although he liked the Mustang, and flew more combat hours in it than any other fighter until he transitioned to jets, he never got over the love he had of the P38… He absolutely loved the 100% increase in survival chances with a second engine, after flying P39s, but felt like it was a step backwards into the Mustang, and a dunking in the Channel convinced him of it… Personally, I’m from the “If you ain’t single-engine, single-seat you ain’t S**t” club, but I can understand Dad’s thinkin’… He didn’t get another twin-engine fighter until the Phantom…
If I had to pick a twin, it’s the P-61, hands down, simply because it just looks mean, even sitting on the ground, waiting to break free and hunt the night skies, and I can also agree with the RAF officer who saw it for the first time and remarked, “My God… Only you Americans would build something that big and call it a fighter…” Followed closely by the Tigercat, which is tied with the Mossie Nightfighter… I may have to get in on this one…
The 262 (when everything was operating properly [;)] ).
Oooo… I love the way you think Mike. [tup]
Dave, the moment I read “twin-engine”, it was the first choice to pop into my brain. I just love that machine!
I have to vote for the P-61. What an aircraft! P-38’s were cool, yeah - but the Widow was awesome.

At first the first plane I thought of was a Misquito, but then again about the hardest thing there was for it’s short lived time in the air was an HE 219 on the Misquito. Still I gotta say the baddest twin engined plane out there is the F15 or an F22.
I was thinking the otherday after watching a documentry on the Dolittle raid thinking “I wonder what would have happened if they’d have flown Misquitos instead of B25’s?” They eventually did build a folding wing version.

P38 is NO.1 but at a close second I`d have to pic the Mosquito!!!..Harv
For prop planes, I would have to say the F7F Tigercat would probably outfight the P-38, but I personally like the Lightening better. For jets, it would be the F-22 for capability, without any doubt. My personal favorite would be the Phabulous Phantom.

It has to be the 262. “It looked like it was going 100mph, standing still” or what about the Do335. Push and pull. Awesome piston engined beast.

Just in case you arent familiar with the project, the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum (MAAM) is currently restoring a P-61 Black Widow. I, myself, have even driven a few rivets on the project (mainly to say that I have! LOL).
Best thing about this build is that when it is complete, they will be flying it! It will be the only one in the world in the air!
One quote that they do have wrong on the page, though, is that they state that there are only four in existence. Worldwide, there are six airframes left. Three on Static Display, the one they have, and two in severely damaged, but (possibly) restorable condition that are under cover on Pacific Islands.
Go check out the page…
So many to choose from. I have a lot of favorites.
P-38 is on top
P-61 is right behind
Mosquito who couldn’t like the wooden wonder
Beaufighter a hash up from a bomber with ten guns firing forward
The Phabulous Phantom with 5000+ built who could argue
F-15 which has never been shot down in combat
and now the F-22 which could outfly its own pilot.
I LIKE ALL OF THEM
I’ve been following the progress on that bird ever since they recovered it, lol…
They would have lost only 32 guys KIA, MIA, POW, or interned instead of 80, for one thing…
I have my own list:
The Mosquito
P-38
Su-35 Super-Flanker
F-15 Eagle
F-22 Raptor
Su-47 Berkut
The Kfir
Su-47 Berkut - As far as I know, this was a technology demonstrator, and hasn’t been fully developed into an operational fighter.
surprisingly nobody here has posted anything about the F 18! Or even it’s older brother the first F 18. Or the ultimate intercepter; the A12 variant of the SR 71 (actually vice versa). And somewhere in this mix there’s got tobe a Tomcat!
