Built this one for the GB as well as to add to my collection of Tuskegee fighters. So far- the P-39Q, P-40L, and now 47D are completed! I must say- this Tamiya kit in particular was a treat to build-- everything fit like a puzzle (well-- except maybe the canopy!) While the color scheme was based on hard evidence (crew chief accounts)- the presence of some of these markings, like the squadron insignia, is purely hypothetical. I’ve seen pics of 99th FS pilots with their insignia on the plane, so I did the same for the 301st!
Thanks guys!! It was a pretty easy build as compared to the last one with the Devastator. Appreciate the comments Darwin, Frank, Mike, Dan, Rick, and EC!
Mark-- yessir-- I plan on building a -B soon…
wibhi2… Well-- the P-39 and P-40 are necessarily “red-tails” as that didn’t come about until they started escort duties. Here are the previous builds though-- more red-nosed I guess [;)]
Great build! I’m almost finished with my P-47 for Capt. Pruitt’s “Alice Jo”, just waiting for the decals for the nose. I hope mine turns out half as good.[bow][bow][bow]
The fuselage numbers were ripped from the Hasegawa Hellcat kit…and I made the insignia on my printer. The rest are the standard Tamiya Razorback decals.
didfal-- Can’t wait to see your take on it!! Looking forward to seeing the NMF Jug…
This week I’ll finally add the decals to my Spirit of St. Louis version. You’re dead right about that Tamiya kit; it’s one of the best OOB kits I’ve ever worked on.
Kind of cool to do a scheme that had only minimal amounts of documentation…I do wish there was more info on the Tuskegee Thunderbolts, but I guess since they only flew them a few weeks- there wasn’t much time for pictures!
