TSR.2 in 1/72 ???

Hi chaps,

Today I discovered a wonderful jet plane on the internet, which is called BAC TSR.2. It amazed me so much that I’m feeling like building one right now (or ASAP)! [8D]
And the quiz question for you is simple - does it exist in 1/72? If yes, which company produces it?

Thanks,
Pisis

You’re a lucky man !!!
Airfix just brought one out in 2005 !!!
I want to have it, it looks really cool !!!

see on www.airfix.com
On their homepage, you’ll find a review of the model with pics.

Cheers,

Jürgen

It isn’t out yet though, and you’ll probably have to wait until the autumn (fall) before you can get your hands on one. I’ve already ordered mine from Hannants over here in the UK, and am looking forward to release immensely [:D]

Pisis,
Yeah, the TSR.2 was an amazing aircraft for its day - too bad ministerial incompetence and in-fighting (essentially) killed the project - and there’s a lot of info and pics around - do a Google search - I’ve found a few sites of interest…

Much of the data will be pretty much identical from one to the next, but it’s all interesting…and even in 1/72 scale, it’s gonna be a big model - almost 15" long and a wingspan of just over 6". Might have to get one myself.

Guess who’s got nine on order[:D].

[:0] Waffor???

Yes, Airfix has announced a 1/72 TSR.2. Initially it was to be released in September, but through another forum I’m on, I’ve heard its been delayed until November.

For those wanting to do a hypothetical TSR.2, Xtra Decal will be issuing 2 sheets of decals specifically designed for the Airfix kit. I believe Hannants are also the ones to go to for that too.

Xtradecal are one of Hannants’ brand names, along with Xtracolor and Xtracrylic… note the pattern? [;)]

These are the reasons, Why I have 9 on order couldn’t make my mind up, Still cant but 9’s better than 5, Enjoy order while you can[:)].

LOL - you’re in “what-if” mode! You go girl! I’m happy with just one, which I’m going to do as the one at Duxford in the anti-flash white scheme, in honour of what might have been…

Here’s links to both decal sheets"

Thanx for replies guys. Can’t wait until autmn (fall) [:D]
It’s a wonderful bird! I’m wondering why they cancelled the project… Well, it’s politics… [|)]

Cheers,
Pisis

Wow, it was tested by Roland Beamont, didn’t know this!

Yep, politics killed it, just as politics killed the Avro Arrow interceptor in Canada in the late 1950s.

The stupid thing is that it probably could have filled the roll of the Tornado up until the 80s. It didn’t die all together though - look at the Jaguar - there are some design cues left over from the TSR-2 there. It’s kind of a mini-version with just the one seat.

What galls me the most though is the fact that it was flying, and showing such promise. Flying on one engine it could outpace a Lightning quite easily - what an appalling waste of money on behalf of Mr Wilson’s Government, eh?

My question is: Who is going to be the distrubutor in the U.S.??[8D] - Calvin

Who distributes Airfix in the US normally? Same guys I would imagine.

I think it would have been better than Tornado, Mainly due to it been built for low level ops at the start, And would have been a better weapons platform, The onboard systems were way ahead fo the time, And the fact the T4 Lightning had both burners lit and it still pulled away, All that speed on burner lit how many A/C today could match that.

Another what if in RAAF colours for me!!!

The demise of the TSR-2 came with the famous (or infamous, depending on your political hue) 1963 Defense White Paper, that “predicted” the demise of the manned interceptor, fighter-bomber, and bomber, all to be replaced be unmanned missles and rockets. There are quite a few books on the subject. BTW this line of thinking was glaringly apparent, though in a different guise, by US defence policy not equiping the F-4 Phantom II with a gun…high performance jet fighters were to engage beyond visual, the shock came in Viet Nam with the dogfights with NVA Migs. Soon everything was to be equipped with a 20mm Vulcan, the Phantom, the F104, and F106 amongst others. Now if we could get decent 1/72 kits of the Avro Arrow, the B70 Valkyrie…
