Trying to locate a B-17

I hope someone can help.

I am trying to locate more info on a B-17G that my wife’s grandfather crew’d. Is there a site that lists down’d B-17’s? All I know is that his aircraft crashed in the English Channel and only he and another crew member survived. I have a pic (I would post, but scanner is not working at the moment) of the crew and the only part of the bomber with anything that can identify it is the word “ship” as part of the nose art. I hope that this great forum of vast info can help. Thanks!

You might try contacting the research department at the AF Museum in Dayton or the 8th Air Force Museum…can you provide tail number, unit or any other tidbit that might be useful…dates help too as does aircraft commanders name.

Go to the Army Air Force Web Site. That is how I tracked down information on my Dad’s B-17G. They have a forum page that you can post messages to. You might be able to post directly to the flight group your wife’s grandfather flew with.

Also, try these links. GOOD LUCK!!!

As difficult as it might be, more info is needed. You might even just try to google his name, ya never know what you might find there. I would absolutley love to help but I need more info, ALOT of b-17’s crashed/ditched in the channel. There’s gotta be a ton of aircraft wreckage just lying on the bottom.

Got the scanner to work. Here is the pic, not much to go on. Still trying to get in contact with my wife’s uncle to get more info. Thanks for the help!

This may or may not help…I found my wife’s great-uncle’s uncle was a Navigator on the Memphis Belle…

What does it say in the lower left hand corner of the pic? A name would be very helpful as well. You were right, the pic has nothing to go on.

Key clues…nose chin turrent…the nose art ends with the word “ship”…a crewman kneeling has a unit patch on his flight jacket.

Hey Kag,

A little closer look at the patch on the Flight jacket closely resembles the 325thBS which was apart of the 92ndBG. “Fame’s Favored Few”(H)

More interesting is that my Uncle was with the 92ndBG assigned to the 325thBS as a bombardier from 43-45!!

Let me see what more I can find for you… A few questions though, what was his Rank & name, could you possibly get a serial # off of his ship and possibley some crew names?

Good hunting!!

Flaps up,

Mike

Thanks all for the help!

I am still trying to retrieve more info on his rank and position on the aircraft. He, Wallace McClaflin, is the one in the center, back row.

Again, thanks for the help!

Just found out that he was Lt. Wallace McClaflin, Pilot. As stated earlier, he and one other crew member survived the crash into the English Channel.

Just curious. wasn’t the normal crew of a B17G 10 men?. I take it the tenth guy was maybe taking the pic?.

All the best.

Greg

I found this, might be a good place to start

Found the name in this LONG list, follow down alphabetically.

His middle initial is L.

Holy Cow!

My dad flew with the 92nd BG 325th and I have been hunting for stuff on him for years.

He flew the Mary Jane 2 when she went down over France(the whole crew made it out on that one I beleive).

He also was a Bomardier.

P.M. me please.

I am hunting for a couple pics.

My Dad’s B-17 stationed at Eye, England, was a ten man crew. But on the fateful day of the plane crash, the crew consisted of only 9. Not sure where the 10th guy was that day, but he obviously got lucky.

Hey RF,
At the moment I am at work on a break… SSshhh, it’s ok the Border will be safe!! Anywho, that is totally amazing…
I am not sure what pix I have/my uncle have because when he came home on the Queen Mary 2(I believe it was the 2nd), some of his stuff was well looked thru and came up missing once home…
His tail gunner took the majority of the pictures that my uncle and the crew took to make a scrap book… Well 2 yrs later he could not be found so my uncle never got his pix back… Sad story for sure!!
I have been in contact with his pilot and his name escapes me at the moment but was known as “Tex”
My Uncles name is Chester Laskowski and he’s from Niagara Falls NY. Once I get home I will check the year book from his unit that was put out about 10yrs ago…
if you do not mind me asking, what is your dad’s name?
