Trumpeter Graf Spee 4/29

Just want to let you know I’m taking this opportunity to start my Trumpeter Trumpeter Graf Spee, I have done Ships out of box before and I have been happy,Yamato,New Jersey,Mikasa,to name a few,but it has to be at least a decade since my last. This Trumpeter kit looks like a fun kit, pretty straight foward.I’m taking the plunge with wooden Artwox Deck,an Aber Barrel Set,and the kit came with basic railings,I don’t remember buying them. But no build blog on this one,too much pressure, but if I’m happy with it,will post some pics.

Will be asking questions along the way, thanks.

Started drilling out portholes and sanded the raised anchor chain off the deck so far.

I bought that kit last month so wil look forward to hearing what you think and seeing your finished pics.

Which one? What scale?

Mine is the 1\350

Looking forward to this Anthony. [Y]

like I said,I’m not,it’s been awhile,we will see how it goes [:|]

Tojo,

I have that kit in the stash and thinking maybe starting it for my German Ships GB in Sep. I’ll be intrested to know your thoughts on the kit.

Making good progress, build is very straightforward, being early war,its not very busy, thats why I chose it,fit is good, decent detail.Problem for me was adapting the brass barrels.

Thats come on quickly, nice work. I have those barrels on order, what was the problem you had. I have not used metal barrels that small yet.

I mean it can be done, just my 1st time, had to cut the plastic barrel off, drill a tiny hole where the brass barrel is to be inserted, and glue in place.one screw up and your scratch building, some guys can adapt a lot of stuff, not me.

Good job Tojo.

I usually start with a tiny pilot hole, .05 mm or similar, and move up in size, that way I can make sure I have everything centered. Once I glue the barrels in the holes, I turn the turret upside down so the barrels stay at an even angle. I can then align them streight as the CA dries.

I came across an old article by Mike Ashey the other day.

He clamped the part in a bench vise between two pieces of balsa which crushed a little and held it tight while he drilled the holes.

Looking forward to this Tojo. Like others, I have this kit in the stash and actually queued up, but seeing that ModelCrazy is going to have a German ship GB, I’ll probably wait. Although I might do the Revell 1/72 Schnellboot…

Anyway, thanks for doing a WIP!

Steve

Enjoying seeing you build this. I appears that you are making remarkable progress. You seem to have done a righteous job on installing the gun barrels.

I feel your pain concerning metal barrels. I’m currently building my very first ship model over on the American Ships GB. It is the 1/700 Dragon USS Oakland CL-95. I took on installing metal barrels on the resin 5" guns I got for it. What a trying few moments of drilling out the tiny holes without ruining the mounts. I actually got 2 sets of resin turrets just in case I messed up. Fortunately I only had one that didn’t come out just right. Here’s a peek at my efforts.

Finished up a little while ago.It was a fun build,I liked the look of the wood deck an brass barrels.Like I said,it has to be a decade since my last ship, thought it came out ikay. Thanks for looking.

I did lose the search light platform in the front of the bridge, hopefully it shows up.

Beautifully done. You’ve eased my trepidation regarding wood decks and metal barrels, obviously worth the extra work.

Man, that sure is nice! The wood decking is fabulous.

Nicly done Tojo. [:D]

Nice job Tojo.

Tojo,

Very well done! I’ll echo what others have said, the wood deck and brass barrels really enhance the appearance of this beautiful ship. Great job!
