Trumpeter Flying Tiger?

Recently I read in FSM that Trumpeter plans to release a larger-scale kit (1/32? 1/24?) for a P-40 from the AVG. Though an armor guy, I’ve always had a place in my heart for the AVG, and would love to build this up. I’ve read that other kits just weren’t 100% there in terms of accuracy.

Anyone have any details on the kit, especially when it will be available in the States? Will Trumpeter provide the Starburst Nationalist symbol? I understand they are almost as sensitive about that as the Germans are about the swastika. Thanks.

Hi Larry,
I saw the P-40 at my local hobby shop this past Saturday. I wish I had bought it!!
I believe it was 1/32 scale and had markings for an RAF and Pearl Harbor versions. Cant remember the price. Should be in your LHS soon.

It’s been available in the States for several weeks. FSM has already run a build review. No AVG markings, probably because of the Chinese attitude toward the Nationalist symbol. Aftermarket AVG decal sheets are available, with the Cutting Edge sheets looking very good.

Sounds like you may be talking about the 24th P-40 from ‘Vintage Fighter Series’ out of England…

VFS P-40 on Squadron

It was just announced a week or so ago…

I finished it last month. Well, almost finished; I still have a few things I want to do to it. Pix of it are here: http://www.craigcentral.com/models/p-40b/default.asp

The kit doesn’t have AVG decals, however Eagle Editions has three different sets. Here is a link to them: http://www.eagle-editions.com/ecavg.htm

hey scott, i’ll be in nashville the week of may 10-14th. cool, i like going to philips toy mart.

Thanks for all the feedback – it was the FSM review of that kit which said that Trumpeter plans to release an AVG version (unless I’m having a senior moment here – just recently turned 40!).

I am considering just waiting and getting that if they release it, as I don’t know much about the fiddly specs, and a dedicated AVG kit might have some other alterations not on the standard P-40b.

Cool! You must be close by. How long has it been since you’ve been to Phillips? Years ago one whole section of their building was kits. Now it’s a few shelves in the back. There aren’t a lot of stores left in Nashville, and Phillips probably has as much as anyone else.

True, but I think the AVG P-40B was pretty much box stock. There could have been some minor differences, I’m not sure. When I was digging up info for my model I didn’t run across anything that really sounded different.

Larry, fraid you had that dreaded Senior Moment , have had more than my share BTW. The build article on the 1/32 Trumpeter P-40B in the April 2004 issue of FSM states that the author used the kit decals for the review but planned to replace them with atermarket decals for the AVG. He also expressed a hope for other P-40 variants, ie. P-40E/F etc. I doubt that Trumpeter will release an AVG version, for reasons noted in prior posts.
