Trumpeter 1/72 M113A1 TOW, a small armor modelling tale

Okay so, a few months ago i built Trumpeter’s 1:72 scale M113 APC.

It’s a pretty sweet kit, but it was looking kind of… bland.

So, i had an idea while playing my favourite military vehicles game, and i thought: Why don’t i slap a TOW launcher on it?

Well, sure enough, i liked the idea a lot, since it’s my single favourite M113 variant. Unfortunately, the available TOWs in this scale are few and far between, so i decided to print one. I found some reference files, but they were horrible and i had to basically redraw everything, and i had to do multiple test prints where i had to split the launcher into two different pieces just to be able to print it with as little supports as possible.

I printed a lot of missiles for other builds, i used one for this particular one but i might add more whenever I’m arsed to paint them.

All the parts for the conversion were cleaned up and prepped for painting, i used a bit of sprue to make the support for the launcher because it’s close enough to reality and good enough in this scale.

It looks quite pleasing after cleanup, assembly, and a layer of mr finishing surfacer 1500.

After painting, i think i nailed it. The layer lines don’t show up at all and it looks great!

I used AK real colours lacquers, specifically Dark OD and Faded OD to give it a zenithal highlight. I painted the yellow stripe with Vallejo moon yellow air, although i did handpaint it on because the paint has good coverage and it’s easier because of how the parts are made. I painted the support shaft with vallejo model air Sinai grey. After that, a gloss coat and black brown wash were applied to the whole part. For the blue lenses i used a trick i perfected on my CV90: Silver base, a little drop of Asurmen blue contrast paint from Citadel, and a drop of UV resin (after varnishing with matt varnish, ofc) to make the lenses glossy. I left the top one in silver to differentiate them a bit according to references.

And here is the model after i assembled the TOW launcher. I think it looks quite nifty.

Thank you for reading this!
I hope you like it.

Love, Silvia

Thank you Tom, if you’re curious, the M113 itself was airbrushed completely freehand with Nato brown and nato black over a highlighted nato green base with some tone variation for hatches and protrusions. Should i post the whole process for that aswell?

Very nicely done! Being a former TOW a gunner, I’m quite partial to any TOW related subjects  It’s very nice to see the seldom modeled basic 113 with TOW. ITVs are rare enough, and kits exist of that beast.
