Trumpeter 1/32nd BAC Lightning, sprue shots.

Well Gang,

My new Trumpeter 1/32nd BAC lightning arrived recently and couldn’t wait to have a look at the kit.

This kit can be made as either a F.1A or a F.3 it can’t be made into a F6 as it has only a small under belly fuel tank, the F6 is a double fuel tank.

Vesion A - Lightning F.1A, XM174, N’56 sqd RAF Wattisham 1963 [red fin]
Version B - Lightning F3, XR711, N’111 sqd, RAF Wattesham 1965 [black/yellow fin] isn’t it strange how trumpeter have copied decal versions from Airfix, surely they could have been more original.

At first glance i thought wow WOW this is going to be a big one, so i did like any ony normal or insane modeller would do and rip all of the plastic bags to have a look at this monster. You get 11 complete sprues which contain all the goods, All the panel lines are recessed and detail is quite good.

First of all i’d like say that for £90 there seems to be a lack of PE in this kit and for a scale of this size i would have expected to see some, no evidence of seat belts neither, so some belts are to be sourced, anyone know if there are PE belts for the Revell 1/32nd Hunter ?if so they will do as i think both have the same M/Baker seat.

The seat is made up of 17 components so anyone who gets this model will love making up the seat.

In the cockpit which looks very detailed indeed there are no Decals for any of the cockpit details, you do get a black film part which goes behind a clear dash part, even airfix’s 1/48th Lightning has nice cockpit decals come on Trumpeter i did pay £90, call me bone but i think you can do a nice job with cockpit decals, i’ll have to find my fine brushes out LOL

Had a look at the rear exhaust rings in which every body is saying there completely the wrong ! To me the don’t look that bad so it won’t bother me at all.

The rear exhaust tubes are moulded as one whole round unit so painting these neatly will be a pain, Airfix’s Lightning are split down the middle so they can be painted with ease, just looking at the sprues i’m begining to think some parts are copied from the Airfix jobbie.

Most large Trumpeter kits i’ve seen have all steel undercarriage to take the weight of the finished model, well this kit has only the main undercarriage legs in steel, THE FRONT IS PLASTIC so i think this may well be a serious weak spot, seeing as there will be a ton of lead above it

Tyres are black rubber type.

The Main Wings where they attach to the fusalage are very tiny indeed and don’t look that strong at all and look to me that they will move like a pair of birds wings when you pick it up. Maybe they could have made ‘interlocking’ points like the ones fitted on 1/48th B17 Main Wings or even a main angled spar could have been added, infact i’ve put the two halves together and taped it all up securely and you can press the sides in

Flaps can move up/down but the aelrons are in a fixed position.

NOTE Trumpeter have now stopped sending out this model as a fault has been spotted on the fin flash and needs to be rectified by a new set of decals.

Box Art

Fuselage halfs, which really doesn’t have any internal bracing in the middle so i think stiffeners will have to be added here !

The ‘‘dodgy’’ rear exhausts.

Weak plastc legs are supplied but i’m not using them

Very nicely detailed Fire streak/Redtop missiles, i’ll still be making up the unused missiles and mounting them on a plinth.

F1 and F3 fin types are supplied.

wheel well/panel detail.

Spot the fault on the decals ??

Just to give you an idea just how big this is the other unfinished Lightning is the Airfix 1/48th kit.

Thanks for looking.

Ian, a few questions. First, which version has the tanks above the wing? Also are there any AM decals sets yet? I do know that Eduards did a PE set for the Hunter, and it did have seat belts with it. Also Flightdecks, but as you probibly know its a bit pricey if you just want the belts from it…Harv

Hi Harv’,

The version is the F6 which has over wing tanks, the picture of the smaller lightning is an F6 but opted out of fitting the tanks.

Theres no aftermarket stuff yet, give it a couple of months and there will be loads of stuff as this mighty big bird is going to be a very big seller.

Lets see what we have here cool subject never done before in large scale. Sparse interior detail. Incorrect color call outs or no color specified at all. Poor parts break down with crappy decals oh and lets not forget extremely high price tag. Yup it a Trumpeter kit alright. Did their 1/32 P-38 about a year ago. For the price tag I can only decribe it as a overpriced and overall a poor kit. I myself will never buy another Trumpeter kit agian. Way to high of a price tag and way to many errors and ommisions for my taste. I hope you have better luck with this release.

I have to agree on the Trumpeter stuff. For what you pay, you don’t get a good fitting kit. [|(] Unfortunately I did not figure this out until I bought quite a few of Trumpeter’s offerings. I have a P-38 that is going to make me buy stock in a filler company. On the other hand they sure make a lot of kits that I would love to have including the BAC Lightning. I have seen some of Ian Lanc’s work and I bet he will make a show stopper. Keep us posted Ian!

Ian, will Trump do a MK6 do you know? Also would it be practical to make this one into a MK6? I realy like the over wing tanks…Harv

Yes Trumpeter are to make the F6 with over wing tanks, have a look on the Hannants website…

Have any idea on a reliese date? Looks like I`ll wait for that one!. Hear that Sean?..Harv

Unfortunatly I also purchased about 4 of thier kits before I actually sat down and tried to build one. To build the P-38 I swear I must have spent a good ten hours sanding parts down to get them to fit smoothly. In the process wipping out all of the detail. IMO Trumpeter kits dollar for dollar are the worst kits ever made. Ian is doing a fantastic job on his build but look at the work he is putting into the kit just to make it look right and stay together. With a price tag of 100.00 pounds this is a joke. Unfortunatly most of us were taken in by the large scale and great subject choices only to have our hearts crushed by a sub-par model. I would say shame on you Trumpeter but I am pretty sure they do not care as they ate laughing all the way to the bank.

Hi Soulcrusher,

I too have had a bad experiances of trumpeter kits and the worst i’ve come across has got to be their 1/48th Vickers Wellington, theres nothing but uneven surfaces but after you’ve made 5 of them you get the hang of them ![;)]

ian

SC, Yes some of there kits are a pain. I have several. I remember your P38 ( it came out fantastic, to me!) I`ve been working on my F105D (for too long now) and I enjoy the build. I realy didnt have any major probs with it. And it was my first build back. So like any manufactorer, there are good and bad.

Ian, thanks once again…Harv

Just been told the F6 lightning is to be the same price as the F1a [2c] but unsure when its out [soapbox]

Hmmm… Trumpeter eh?

This forum is the where I’ve heard of that brand first.

1/32 has a quality all it’s own. BIG. And the BAC “Lightning” is one heck of a worthy subject. It’s interesting, strange, historically significant and cool as all get-out!

Keep-A-Goin’ man! You’re doing the mighty bird justice.

Yes I have followed all of you amazing builds in this forum Ian. You are like a lion tamer when it somes to these sub-par kits. I whish I had your talent my freind. You make it look easy when I know first hand that it is not. By the way great work on that lighting so far.
