Trivia Series #8, Question #2

This aircraft was a 2-seat advanced trainer built during World War II. It went through a number of variants according to engine availability and was even modified as a fighter. It was a fast, strong and aerobatic aircraft and was as an excellent trainer for the high performance fighter aircraft of the day. It had two different versions; the first could reach nearly 300 mph and was one of the fastest and most maneuverable trainers of its day. 900 were built, including 26 which were modified to a single-seat configuration and armed with six machine guns. 1,748 of the second variant were built and was equipped to carry eight practice bombs and one machine gun mounted in the front fuselage. In 1942, all variants had their wings modified to reduce stress on the wings and increase maneuverability.
