Trivia Series #6, Question #8

This aircraft was of a type used to test tailless designs. In the late 30’s Armies were looking for a way to airlift heavy military units. At that time their were no cargo aircraft big enough to lift a tank, and even if such a large aircraft had been created it would have needed many special facilities. A possible solution explored was to add wings to a specific piece of equpiment, but most aircraft designs were based on straight wings with extended empennage and stabilizers. A design by one engineer was for a 100 ft wingspan aircraft consisting chiefly of a swept wing with vertical stabilizers on the wingtips. The prototype aircraft that made the first flight was built entirely of wood. Tests were sucessful, but the project was abandoned since a decision had been made to develop a specific type of aircraft which could carry heavy equipment within their fuselages. The one prototype aircraft built was a tailless flapped monoplane to be available for research to test the stability and control of tailless aircraft.
