Trivia Series #5, Question #1

Welcome to the next series of aircraft trivia questions! This series will be based on the prototype and experimental aircraft of the world. I hope everyone is enjoying the trivia challenge! Now for Question #1!

This was a unique fighter aircraft that only flew as a prototype, and never entered production. It began as an entry to a late 1940’s contest for a supersonic interceptor aircraft. This company’s proposal, a delta-winged fighter with specialized equipment, resulted in two prototypes in late 1951. Twelve aircraft were ordered before a prototype had even flown. No armament was ever fitted to this aircraft, but it was intended to have four 20 mm cannon and folding-fin unguided rockets. It was powered by twin turbojets that were underpowered and the unique undercarriage design that was not very successful. It did attain Mach 1 once in a shallow dive, making it the only aircraft of it’s type to break the sound barrier. Four static display examples remain today. Even though long out of service, it was assigned a designation under the 1962 unified system.
