Trivia Series #14, Question #7

In 1975, the military required the design of an advance version of new carrier based VTOL fighter which was intended to replace an existing aircraft with secondary attack capabilities. It operates with two lift-jets mounted vertically behind the cockpit and a vectoring nozzle on the main engine. Four prototypes were ordered, and in 1989, the first prototype made its first flight, two continued in flight testing until 1995, with the other two used for engine and structural testing. This aircraft was intended to fly at speeds of Mach 1.7, but it was never able to fly supersonic, and was claimed to have had a maneuverability comparable to another well known fighter.
