Due to its size, this ungainly aircraft was commonly known by an unflattering nickname. Introduced in 1916, it proved to be a competent ground attack aircraft when used to bomb enemy targets but was a poor performer in a dogfight. It was followed by a newer model which was equipped with a more powerful engine. Although this aircraft saw service in several theaters of the war, it was soon taken out of service owing to a high casualty rate. When attacked by enemy fighters they were so clumsy and un-maneuvrable they could not get away, and with no gunner they could not defend their tails.
