What aircraft in WW II, made four launches and 3 landings , all sucessful, for test and evaluation purposes, but was not an aircraft built for the Navy. This aircraft was also given a special name.
P-51 Mustang. The Navy evaluated it as a possible carrier plane but decided against using it.
Darwin, O.F. [alien]
My guess is the P-39. The Navy name was Airabonita.
What , no fourth landing ?
Shell
Yardbird had the correct answer. P-51D
LOL… I think it landed on terra firma.
Dennis, do you have any pics/references of the P-51 on said carrier? I have a small collection of pics of a/c that have no business on a carrier deck and this would be cool for the collection.
Speaking of this…anyone see the excellent video of the C-130 carrier trials? I don’t have the link, but it is on the Air & Space website, www.airspacemag.com
