Traditional Hobby shops you can still walk into

It was a true going out of business sale.

Here is a sample , hobby room is coming together and yes I have the perfect wife.

I have at least five four teir plastic shelf system in my barn packed full!

So yeah , she is a keeper . I’m not going to tell you about the 67 Elky or the 72 c10 classic trucks in the garage or all the target rifles I have.

She supported errr I mean approved the purchase of them all.

I share your love of big aircraft, and there are some great ones hiding on those shelves. I was looking closely at the pictures and spotted a lot of 1/32 scale in there, along with some seriously big bombers.

I’d love to build more of the really big stuff myself, but I don’t have anywhere to put it all, so I settle for big aircraft in 1/48 scale. :joy:

So what’s the plan when you start building all of those? Where in the world are you going to display them?

The top shelf is 1/32 and the next lower is 1/48…I either hang from the ceiling or from the wall in the hallway near the celling. since the wings are removable some sit in storage containers until they get swapped/switched out. I have many more 1/48 and 1/32 in my outdoor shop space I refer to as the barn.

They are not in my neighborhood (actually they are over 2,500 miles away) but I really liked Burbank House of Hobbies and Brookhusrt Hobbies in California. Both are like the hobby shops of old, plus they have an excellent kit and supply selection. And the people there are very nice, which really helps the overall experience. Oh, and Pegasus Hobbies. They feel like a Costco because their sales floor is enormous. They have a great selection and great service.

Brookhurst was one of my favorites when I was living in San Diego. Whenever I was in the area I’d stop by - they had a great inventory.
Today in AZ I’m close to Andy’s Hobby Headquarters which is great. Couple of Hobby Lobby stores are near by as well.

Hiawatha Hobbies in Waukesha, WI is still going strong. I’ve been shopping there for 35+ years. It’s been a family run business. The owner has long since passed. But his son still carries on the business. The store is about 50% dedicated to model railroading items. But it also has RC, Models, Educational toys, Rockets, A large selection of paints (especially Vallejo), and so much more. And best thing of all: They’re only 2-3 miles from me.

Okay, now I’m jealous. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: A family-run hobby shop you’ve been going to for 35 years, with a big selection of models and Vallejo paints, and it’s only 2 or 3 miles from your house?

I’d probably be broke.

My best-case scenario is over an hour’s drive away, and even then it’s a medium-sized selection that’s mostly older kits, with not a lot of current stuff.

Seriously though, it’s great to hear that places like this are still going strong. There’s just something about walking into a real hobby shop and wandering the aisles that shopping online can never replace.

Those were the go old days for me. I used to have three hobby shops within 5 miles and now it’s one about 50 miles but to be fair that one that’s 50 miles is about two miles from where I lived when I had three.

If you are in the Sacramento area, Viking Hobby is small brick and mortar store that has been around for decades. They are excellent for models and boardgames.

In the Twin Cities area we are fortunate to have some really good hobby shops.

There’s Scale Model Supplies in St. Paul for decades now moving to Arden Hills.

Hub Hobby Center with Stores in Richfield and Little Canada.

I’m sorry to report that Viking Hobby is closing in the next few weeks. They have been in business for about 50 years and have had a big impact on the Sacramento area modelers over the decades. :sob:

Ah, Scale Model Supplies – you mean The Dungeon! Soon to no longer actually BE a dungeon, as you noted.

My closest ones are King’s Hobbies in Austin as well as the Hobbytown in the same city, but further north. I live about 42 miles away. I suppose, at this point Lion Heart Hobbies is about as close to me as the other two.

San Antonio is a ‘must go there for something specific’ before I travel in that direction, it’s about 75 miles from where I live. Beyond that, all the places near me are Gaming Stores where Pokemon, Magic the Gathering, Warhammer and D&D are played – and to which they cater with the appropirate miniatures, paints and tools.

One of the ‘concept’ ideas I have had while prepping to get back into the hobby is to offer my painting services to those gamers who need armies painted, but lack the skill/desire to do it themselves. Those folks will SHELL OUT for that sort of thing. Figured I could possibly make it pay for my plastic, tools and paint over time.

The only two in San Antonio Hibby Shops I haven’t been to in San Antonio is the one on the west side and northwest side.

If it wasn’t so far away and down some of the worst highway in the U.S. I would go down the next ipms show and visit those two HS..
