It’s certainly not a weird comment, but due to my decidedly non-petite stature, I often get: “You made this, with THOSE hands?”
I take it as a compliment![:D]
One time a fellow strolled into the local hobby shop which sells nothing but plastic. He was looking for R/C, after finding out there was no R/C to be found, he peered into the display cases of built models, turned around to the group of us standing and discussing models and said, “You guys need therapy.”
I didn’t respond as he made his comment on his way out the door, but all I thought in my head is,“What do you think building models is?”
I don’t usually get many questions about my models, but I have been called a nazi for building primarily german ww2 models. I also have had several “That looks like crap” comments from people that dont even build models.
I had someone ask me why someone would want to sit for so long building models. I explained to them it teaches patience. And from what I’ve seen here in Phoenix, there are alot of people that would benifit from a hobby like ours.
A little OT, but I was in the LHS last night, just to see what they had or if they had changed at all in the last few months. (They’re strictly R/C folk) When I mentioned that I did plastic kits, one of the clerks ran up to me in a tizzy, waving a catalog wildly about his cranial. All he said was, “Have you ever heard of a company called Tamiya? I heard they make some neat stuff!” I had to leave the store, I was laughing so hard. Apparently, they’ve never heard of Trumpeter or Hasegawa, either.

One that really gets me is when my neighbor comes over and walks into my modeling room, I’m sitting there, cluing something together, and what do you think the first thing out of his mouth is, Yep…“Whatcha doing, building a model”?..My ans, “No Bill, I’m killing roaches with Super Glue”. Heres your sign!!![:-,][(-D]
