Top Gun 2005

This post is a digression from plastic models into the world of radio control scale models. As fellow modelers, you can surely appreciate all the effort put into these models by the best of the best in the RC community. These models must be absolutely perfect for static judging and fly equally well. Use the link below for 30 more pictures of these fabulous airplanes. Click on each thumbnail for a larger picture or use the arrows in the top corners to go through them only as enlargements. all of these photos were taken by Michael Bacon

Thanks a lot of the link. I absolutely love scale R/C. Those are all equally great models!

WOW!! My Dad builds and flys Piper Cubs with 12’ wingspans, but I sure wish I could talk him into building a jet so I could paint it.lol

I’m not into RC, but I must admit the F-100 looks like the real deal. Whoever build it must have put in about 50 times the number of hours than I put into building my Monogram F-100 Tbird.

Maybe some RC expert can answer a dumb question I’ve wondered about. I notice that there are F-16 and F-4 RC models at these shows, and I wonder how they keep them flying. The wings on the real aircraft are designed for transonic or supersonic flight, but RC aircraft cannot approach those speeds. The low-drag wings on the 1:1 article don’t provide a lot of lift at low airspeeds, and the lack of dihedral makes them less stable too. My question is this - do RC modelers have to build the model wings with a more “normal” (lower speed) wing profile to keep them aloft at lower airspeeds, or do the engines on the RC aircraft provide enough oomph to keep the jet wing flying efficiently at scale airspeeds?

This is probably not the place to ask, but since the topic was here anyway…

Beautiful models, Darwin! Yes, they are really something to see fly, in the hands of a good operator. [:)] My uncle and his boys got into R/C about four years ago, and have basically abandoned all their other pursuits since. [:D] But they sure have a ball with it.

Take care,
Frank

oh wow that brings back memories i use to fly 1/2a scale planes and a few ARF (almost ready to fly) foam spitfires
but i gave it up because i figured modeling would be cheaper…HOW WRONG WAS I !! LOL!

Loved them all, but my top 3 would have to be 3)the P-47, 2)the Phabulous Phantom, and 1) the Do335.

Beautiful pix, Darwin. I love the big R/Cbirds.

Something like These Phantoms?

These are from a really cool R/C site called Bob Violett Models They specialize in true-turbine R/C planes (not ducted fans, but true turbines). Be sure to have your checkbook ready though because they aren’t cheap!

Some amazing aircraft there. I absolutely LOVE the Su-27. I wish I could get a jet RC plane, but I"m not even going to begin wondering how much a full system would cost.

They have some USED ones that range from $6,000 to $20,000! And that’s probably without the radio gear

I build both R/C planes and models. I enjoy both, but seeing your model fly is something that really feels good. Sometimes the planes look like real things in the sky.
