I was surprised to see a European aircraft in there !
No Vimy, no Bleriot, no Ryan Monoplane, no AVRO 504 or Tiger Moth and definitely no Comet or HE178.
These polls seem to be nothing more than a popularity contest whose results depend on where the poll was taken.
It seems that the majority of peoples aviation history comes comes complete with tunnel vision.
No Choppers? I’m a little disappointed.
Its not an easy task, selecting the “Top Ten” aircraft. There are so many from which to choose, I salute those that make the attempt. These lists are generalizations. They’re a little of everyone, and a lot of no one. Just my opinion.

I’m actually surprised that the 109 isn’t on there. Its only the most produced fighter in history! And what’s the deal with the lack of helos?! No UH-1??? That’s kinda lacking. But then again, if you asked ten people to name the top ten aircraft of all time, you’d get 100 different aircraft. (Can we ever agree on anything?!) [;)]

as for the 1700’s, i thought it was a group of ex pats that wanted rid of the british control!.
before you start, i am not anti american, i just wish people would look behind the wall.
i see the p51 is listed, mmmm, is that the one the USA was not interested in, then along came the british purchasing commitee, it was built, and it was hopeless!, until we put a Rolls Royce engine in .

Guys, We’ve got to admit that Sagindragin makes an indisputable point there.
I’ll propose the Wright Flyer as the most significant aircraft in history in spite of
the Smithsonian’s efforts to prove otherwise.
I’ll even admit that the Yanks didn’t win the Battle of Britian though the Eagle
Squadron which was mostly American and Canadian certainly tried their best.

Looks like this little poll has definitely got a U.S. slant to it. Were it not for the Spitfire’s performance and the sheer nerve and determination of the pi;ots who flew them there would have been no need for the P-51.
Granted, it was a great airplane, albeit after the airframe was mated to the Rolls Merlin. Its success could also be attributed to the overwhelming weight of numbers that were committed against the Lufwaffe. Had the Brits possessed sufficient numbers of Spits and
pilots to fly them, I would venture that the Battle of Britain would have taken on a decidedly different direction. I believe the Brits would have chased Herr Herman’s charges all the way back to Germany rather than
holding them at bay across the Channel.
I’ll also toss my support to the DH Comet as far as commercial jet liners are concerned. It tested and proved the feasibility of commercial jet travel long before the 707.

In the latest issue of Wings magazine. they listed the top legends of aviation. This is their picks.
Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Charles “Chuck” Yeager and Neil Armstrong. All American. This could also open up a discussion as to the top four pioneers or legends of aviation.
OBTW, in the same issue, Bob Hope was also included as a legend in his own way.
Ahhhhh, Bob Hope. A very funny, talented and patriotic American.

BTW, more than likely, if the poll of aircraft would have been done by a British paper or mag. Most of the aircraft would have been of British decent.
As I eluded to earlier. I just like modelling and aircraft. Wherever they’re from.

DUDE ITS MSNBC! They are the media. Do you really expect a decent poll from them?
Heck they (the media) were the ones that predicted the 2000 election through “exit polls” and screwed everything up for us all. Don’t worry too much about the American slant deal. Heck you have to take most of what the media says and prints with a grain of salt. They are interested in how many papers, ads, etc. they can sell!
