What color are the exhaust stacks on the Titanic? What available paint would be a good match? They seem to be a yellow-peach color.
That sounds like Buff to me…

Normie,
I have built aprox. 22 Titanics in the past 15 years. The best match is
Monogram-Humbrol #7 and a matt finish #49. Mix each 1/2 oz. tin together and add 10 drops of acetone to thin. This is a 99.9% perfect finish and shade.
Which version or kit are you building? IF you have the “older” minicraft kit in 1/350th. scale, before improvedments I have written an article on how to build the model making corrections as you go to give you a more accurate and correct model. Here is a link to where the article is posted.

Additionally, in 1998 I was contacted by Mincraft Model Company Pres. Al Tremble and contracted to write a full report on the copy-right infringment that the Chinese Acadmey (sp) Model Co. had done. They simply copied and reduced the scale to 1/400th. and pop out a kit. When they copied the kit, they copied several mistakes. making the case simple for the court!.
Mr. Tremble liked my report so well and the improvements suggestions to the kit, I was honored to have my name written into the new instructions for the “NEW” corrected version of the model. If you have the new version look on the “History” section for Jacob B. Groby III as well as others.
I found this on ebay Man he’s good! let all the pictures load there are quite a few.

Then you have Jokers who think this is a good model! HA

Wow…! That model is amazing! (the first one, I mean…!)
the first, (set of pictures), model is excellent [:)], the second one is a piece of crap, least of all, the wrong colors and no telling what else is wrong with it[xx(]
Getting paid to build a model makes you a professional, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re any good.
Guys like #2 give the rest of us commission modelers a bad name…
Jeff
I built the early version for my wife. I was so discussted with the poor fit, inaccuracies, and ejection pin marks EVERYWHERE. As far as I am concerned it was a total waste of my money.
[:0][:0]How the heck do you build 22 Titanics? I can hardly build one. And I’m not very fussy either. As long as the seams don’t show and the paint is half decent I’ll just finish it right out of the box and for me that is good enough. I might add a few extra rigging lines but that is about it.
Oh yeah Big Jake you were wondering about the kit its the old Revell 1/570. Nothing fancy. Some pieces are warped so I have to give them the hot water treatment.
The color is “buff” on the stacks and I might try the Humbrol although I did find some formulas on the net for mixing your own.
My model will look very toy like compared to some of those other models, I can tell you that![:I]
Because of the movie being released MAN everybody wanted one believe this or not I had an assembly line set up so I could paint the different parts and put them back in the boxex then worked om t a once. I was putting them out a 3 per month. I had bought paint by the case 12 bottles at a time and moved up to the big airbrish bottle.
On the small 570th. scale there is not a whole lot you can do with it.
Better to mix the two humbrols together than trying to mix the formula they give you the shade differance cannot be seen with the eye.
Jake, how do you stay sane?
I built one, the old Entex kit for a couple after Ballard found the Titanic. Those lifeboats drove me crazy because every one had one side larger than the other.
Jeff, I agree about contestant #2. I hear more and more people asking why they should pay my price when they can get a “authenic ship model” on ebay. Well, these are mass produced by slave labor in some remote village in a third world country. The profit margin is enormouse. Scale? They don’t care since they are working on peoples ignorance.
I had a lady bring a “Cuttysark” to me after it got bombed by a football. It was a mahogony one with the cardboard sails and BIG portholes. I gave her a choice, I could rebuild this one for $XXX amount, of she could buy another one at Pier One Imports for around $40.00.
Scott
Sane? Sane? I’m married with 3 kids and a full time job on call 24/7 What gave you the impression that I was ever SANE!
Big Jake - that was an interesting story about how you were involved with the MINICRAFT Titanic thing.
Oh yeah, “authentic” Titanic No.2 with the flashing lights is pretty bad.[xx(]
You would be surprized how many people out there can tell junk from the real quality. The quality of Model #2 does not bother me, because anyone can see the differance.
We’ve gotten a decent share of attention over the past 20 years for our shop. I’m not tooting my hown norn here or mean to seem bragging , but our shop has been featured in newspaper articles 6 times, a local news channel special, and a magazine cover (FSM Jan '89). Most of the attention is because we donate a lot of stuff for the MarinesToys for Tots, Make a wish Foundation and other kids charity. We make a model such as the Cutty Sark, and it’s get raffled off at an auction type event, that’s where the big money is, because people do not mind spending it on kids…
We’ve worked on commerical and movie sets and built props, done accident recreations and by far some of the best work we’ve done has been for some local DA’s to get indictments agains folks for murder. Man the photo’s they take at a crime scene is NOTHING like on television! WHOA!
HOLY COW! …that second kit looks like the XMAS TITANIC from HELL!!
Now…on the first kit …didn’t he say he scratch built the hull?..That sure looks like the Academy HULL …I’m looking at mine right now and it sure looks the same to me.
I just looked and phew!..Gold Medal Models still has the DAVIT set for the 1/350th TITANIC…cool!..of all the photo etch and decals I have… thats the only set I do not have.
Isn’t that funny…60.00 doller model kit…over 150.00 in aftermarket STUFF!! [:p]
I’m gonna have to finish my TITANIC some day…here take a looksie!..NO POP UPS and NO ADDS!
