Titanic detail sets

G’day,

I’m about to start work on a 1/400 Academy Titanic kit. I want to know which detail set to choose, the eduard or Toms modelworks. I need rails and other general details. Which of these two sets is the better one? and which covers the most detail?

Go with Toms…if you’re looking for accuracy, he’s worked directly with the Titanic Society.

I haven’t built a Titanic or examined any of the photo-etched sets closely, but I have the impression that the several sets by Gold Medal Models are excellent. In addition to the usual railings, ladders, etc., GMM offers such things as deck benches and crew/passenger figures. The firm’s owner, Loren Perry, discusses various controversial aspects of them on his website. It can be reached via the Steel Navy site.

I thenk Your best bet is to go with Gold Medal photo-etch there seems to be a little more attention to things like where to make the bends in the railings and stuff. I never had a single problem with GMM but did have some fitting problems with Toms though. I guess everybody has there own personal favorites Good Luck.

I just checked the links on the Steel Navy site. It seems that Gold Medal’s Titanic detail sets are all in 1/350 scale. The list is quite impressive: there’s a basic set, an additional set of really precise details, and a fret of figures. There’s also a link to a model that Mr. Perry built, incorporating all those sets, and it’s pretty spectacular. But nothing in 1/400. The link to Tom’s Modelworks establishes that that firm does indeed have a 1/400 Titanic set, and on the basis of the photo therein it looks pretty impressive.

I haven’t gotten on board the Titanic bandwagon, but I have the general impression that there’s quite a bit of argument over which kit, the Academy 1/400 or the older-but-updated Minicraft 1/350, is a better basis for a serious model. Clearly the 1/350 version offers more in the way of aftermarket parts.

I was disappointed to learn, in the FSM review, that the new 1/720 Titanic has significant problems. That scale is more to my taste for such vessels. I find it remarkable, given the current public interest in the topic, that there are so few classic liners in 1/700 or 1/720. Imagine what a curio cabinet containing, say, a Titanic, a Lusitania, a Queen Mary, and a United States would look like! Then throw in a couple of those beautiful old German ships, maybe the Normandie, the Aquitania…Well, maybe some day.
