Well guys, I’ve taken a break from the massive Tupolev Bear for the time being. I finally got my DeHavilland Mosquito that I ordered months ago so I decided to start it today.
I’ve decided to build the Mk.II 157 Squadron example of the Mosquito…It is painted in all matt black…one stealthy bird…sorry…insect. It is supposed to have bare wings with no ordinance but I think the wings would look better with a couple bombs strapped to em’.
Today, I started with the nacelles and wings…painting the wheel wells and wing assembly…
I just finished the left wing…
This is my first Tamiya kit…these things are freakin’ great, i don’t know why I’ve never done one before. I’ve done cars, but never a plane. Seeing this kit makes me want to go back to my hobby shop and get the A-10 they have…hmmm, we’ll see.
Off to a great start, Tamiya has some great ones. If it’s the Tam. A-10 you’re referring to, it’s not quite as good as some of there others, it’s ok though. The ordinence is very basic, kinda clunky. wings rule!!!
Just so that you’re aware, the NF MkII was a purpose-built night-fighter variant and as such it wouldn’t really be appropriate for it to have bombs under the wings. I’m not even sure if the fuel tanks would be appropriate for a MkII.
However, as always, it’s your model to build as you wish.
Thanks Phil, I’m aware this perticular plane doesn’t have bombs under the wings but I wanted “something” under the wings. I wanted to keep the black paint but didn’t want the wings to be bare so, bombs away!
I don’t usually build my models to be super accurate pieces, I just build them as I’d like to see them, adding a bit here, taking some out there…I enjoy it that way.
I thank you for your cretique Phil…stay tuned to see how she turns out.
Hmm…I’m really starting to re-think the flat black finish. Flat black is so hard to keep clean…I just painted my wheels flat black and they scuff up so easilly. I think it will turn out fine once I set the decals and shoot it with a flat clear finish…anyone have experience with flat black? If so, how did it turn out?
You may want to try painting in semi gloss or gloss black overall during your construction. This will skip the need for the gloss clear coat, and after the decals are applied, then you can add your flat top coat.
I did the Beaufighter in “flat black”. I actually did a very dark grey, almost black, then lightined it up a touch inbetween the panels. That scuffed just the same as flat black. But once I do your clear coats, those scuffs disappeared. Good luck, can’t wait to see the finished product!!!
Well, today I assembled the landing gear struts and started the cockpit nose section with the 4 machine guns…bad ass!
I don’t think I’m going to get into a huge amount of detail on the interior, not going to see a heck of alot, might do some dry-brushing in the areas that can be seen from the canopy.
Well, being laid off has it’s perks I suppose, gives me time to work on my birds. I just finished the Mossie a couple hours ago. Never done a Tamiya before and it will not be my last…what a gem of a kit. Took a tonne of pics along the way, hope you guys enjoy it…
Got the fuse stitched up…this kit has awsome seems, only spent a couple hours on them with very little putty used, just decent sanding sticks…
Shot it with Tamiya Black in a rattle can…
Began laying the crappy decals…these things are too stiff, they don’t flex very well…
Shot it with Testors clear laquer dullcote…
Installed landing gear, l/g doors…props…
The canopy took me a couple hours easily…I used Tamiya tape to section off a few strips of black at a time and brushed on the flat black…
And here she is…sexy in black eh?
This thing went together too easy…it was great. I built it with a couple bombs under the wings to create a night fighter bomber…not accurate, but I likes it. There are supposed to be covers on the exhaust manifolds…I omitted them because I didn’t want to hide the manifolds…they look mean.
I was so pissed…I was putting the very last parts on her…the lights on the wing tips. I had one in my tweezers and it popped out…CRAP! The thing flew across the room…I heard it land, but that was about as far as I got…didn’t find it.
Hope you guys enjoy it…sorry for all the pics by the way.
Thanks guys…Yup, she was a quick build indeed. When you’re working with these Tamiya paints that dry to the touch in 5 minutes, these things go quickly.
