Tiger I WIP First try at Zimm.. Dial up warning, alot of pics

Wanted to share the recent build before the whitewash is applied for the Winter Warriors GB. This is Tamiya’s Tiger I late version. A little nervous about the white application, I could be destroying alot of work in this one. (from my execution of the whitewash, not the theory[:D])

But anyway… Here it is, zimm was done with Squadron green thinned with isopropyl alcohol. A little scratch building done, mainly done to the AA gun mount on the commanders cupola. Some items have been left off for the whitewash and will be added afterward.

Comments, critiques, advice welcome as always guys.

Not bad at all Dale, to my eyes anyways! At least you found the courage to try a zimm application. I am still cowering in the corner thinking about my first zimm job!

OK, here we go.

Overall I like the look of this. The camouflage looks first rate to me. I’m assuming you’re going to take off some of the shine as you continue. The wear around the turret hatches is quite complimentary and looks realistic. The chipped zimm shows attention to detail as it correctly exposes red primer underneath. You “could” darken some of the red primer edges to simulate chipped or worn primer for added interest. Maybe add a wash/pinwash to help bring out details before white-washing? You should apply some silverish bare-metal wear on the track horns.

The “one” thing that doesn’t quite look right to me is the number of vertical ridges in the zimm. The front glacis looks better.

Please don’t take this as anything but trying to be helpful, as per your request. I’m sure you’ve worked quite hard on this and your hard work shows through.

I agree that you went to lot of work to cover it up with whitewash, especially the nice camoflauge. The zim is pretty credible, though maybe a bit thick for scale. Good luck on the rest.

Appreciate the comments guys, thank you.

Disastermaster, the shine will vanish with the next step, guaranteed. I did add some darker edges to the exposed primer as you advised. It highlights real nice against the light color, thanks for the tip. After the whitewash there’s going to be more work done to the edges of both the tank and tracks. The ridges on the zimm, too many or not enough?

Tigerman, it is a bit thick in some areas on here, even after sanding it down trying to get the proper scale. Going to try milliput on the next zimm job I reckon, to be able to control it a little better. Allow for extended time to work with it too, this stuff, even thinned, dries real fast. [:D]

Thanks again for the advice and help guys, going to try to spray the white today and start working that over. More later.

Looks good. You have more b*lls than I do. I practiced and practiced (Now I have a '65 Chevelle with a really bad zimm job…) and just wasn’t happy so I went with the Tiger II sans zimmerit. I’m assuming most of the battle is convincing yourself to take a perfectly good model and potentially wrecking it!!! Love the camo.

I can’t wait to see it completed!!

BTW…How did you get the fender skirts to have such a lifelike “banged up” look???

I’m not into armour (Canadian spelling), yet, but maybe I will try it down the road (no pun intended). I started with planes and automobiles. Don’t hold that against me.[:D].

I like what you have done. I look at the other modelers works as you never know what might work in a crossover. You know, tank commander to wing commander.

For a first attempt at zimmerit, it’s a respectable job! Hey, just the fact that you dove right in, and actually went for it gains you two [tup][tup]'s in my book!

The ridges are a bit thick for scale, but that’s probably due to the way you achieved the look? With a screwdriver, it appears? It’s hard to get a proper rendering of zimm in this manner with Squadroon putty; a slower setting two-part epoxy putty like Milliputt or Apoxy Sculpt is better for this method. Squadron’s putty works best for the “drag a sawblade” method. But, hey–like I said, great attempt for a first time!

The rest of the tank looks really great too–nice camo; I agree that it’s too bad you’re gonna cover it with whitewash, but if it’s a really beat-up wash, it’ll be cool to have that peeking through! [:D]

Not enough.

You need about double the ridges next time. Try a thinner tool for the Zim too.

Sanding it down will only diminish the Zim effect and make it look thicker. Bad medicine, white man.

Imagine each ridge of the Zim’s profile as a ^. As you sand it down (down to the line, for extreme example) the tip ^^^^^^^^^^ (apex) becomes more blunt.
