Tiger (and other German armour) periscopes

I have a question regarding the periscopes used on the Tiger 1. Was the armoured glass a clear green or just clear? If it was a clear green colour, how would one best simulate that on the pericopes? I have the new Dragon Tiger (late) which I’m about to build and the model is supplied with clear periscopes. If I paint them green they would no longer have a clear appearance. Any ideas?

My other question is what colour would best be used to paint the remainder of the periscope which looks black in the reference books I have.

My last question regards all German armour periscopes. Was the armoured glass a clear green or clear on all German armour?

Regards

Dean

Hi Dean,

Cannot provide exact answer (my references are still boxed after relocating to Syd), but I believe that in those old days the periscope glass was just… untinted glass. So I’d leave your Tiger’s just clear as provided. [:D] It also depends onthe scale you’re building, for 1/72 & smaller just painting it semigloss (or matt) black will do the “scale effect” of a small opening and the darkness behind it.

If you want to tint clear plastic (eg: for a “Huey” rooftop), Humbrol used to have “clear colors” that might still be available (I believe were acrylics). Do remember some: green, red, blue, grey, orange.[2c]

Good luck, mate! [8D]

I knew I’d seen it somewhere…

The Tamiya acrylic clear colors are much easier to find and work just as well.

Also, if you are building it with the hatches shut. It’s dark in there… Since the scopes are clear, you can paint’em from the back side. Steve
