I’m building a Tiger 1 from heavy tank battalion 505, from operation citadel.
It will have barbed wire attached to the sides and rear of the hull. I’m using an after market kit from Neograde to do this, however it’s a little vague on how the wire is attached.
I was thinking small rods(plastic or brass) drilled into the hull, and using some photo etch scraps to make “hooks” on the side mud gaurds.
Would anyone have any reference photos showing a close up of how they were actually linked on, or even a completed kit would do for some ideas. The only photos I can find are too far away to see any detail.
I can’t say i have seen any photos of this, but i would imagine drilling holes through the side armour would be both very difficult, especially in the field, and would possably weaken the armour. Tigers had attachments alont the side for holding btow cable, i think these would have been welded, is it possable the wire is held onto that.
Sorry, wasn’t 100% sure if you just meant the model or the real thing. I have never seen anything like that before, i can see why you would want to do it. I don’t think you would need to drill anything into the hull, just glue as you would PE. Would be nice to find some close ups, but i would imagine the field workshop would use anything that came to hand.
To be honets i think you are going to have a hard job getting close up pics of the parts your after. I can’t imagine it would be somthing a combat photographer at the time would be concentrating on. I think you basically have a free hand to use what ever you think right.
These portions of photos show barbed wire attached to Tigers of s.Pz.Abt. 505.
The first is Tiger 100, and it has a metal strip attached on each side, using the frontmost bolt of the side fenders. There are no other metal strips along the side of the tank; the barbed wire seems to be looped in the various tool holders and other details on the top deck. At the rear, the S-mine launcher probably provides somewhere to tie the end of the wire.
Looks like they have kind of attached a mini fence to the top of the fender where it bolts onto the hull. Thats how I’ll do it, I might try melt 10 pieces of sprue if I can’t find any better option.
