Could someone who uses this brush please tell me how they get good results thinning acrylics. I’m using Tamiya Acrylics and I cant get the right mixture, I either get it too thinned, too thick, or it splatters for me.
What do you use to thin and at what ratio ?
Maybe the problem is that Aztec airbrush, eh?

I’ve used Tamiya acrylics for years AJ, and have never really had any problems with them. rarely thin them as I find most coours are about the right consistency already.
Mind you, I don’t have an Aztec either.

i use Tamiya acrylics and a Aztec double action.
don’t know the model number, i have had it a good long time.
unlike the other frum guys, i don’t hate this airbrush.
i use mostly the following recipe:
‘tan’ nozzle, 20 psi, paint:thinner ratio between 3:1 and 2:1
(i have thinned some as much as 1:1, but not so much lately)
i adjust the thumbwheel so that i just get color, but no spatter, using the airbrush in single action mode. then i paint single or double action depending on what i am trying to accomplish.
i have good results w/ everything but flat white.
mind you, i am not pinstriping 1/144 or 1/72 kits.
i model 1/24 cars, 1/35 armor, 1/48 & 1/32 aircraft.

until my buddy turned me on to Tamiya paints and used these numbers and ideas to get me in the ballpark, i was ready to give up on this brush.
i have had few complaints since.

I use Tamiya, and I have found that 91% Isoprophol alcohol works excellent! I tried my 2:1 mix in my Aztek and it just kept spitting, spattering so I put it out of it’s misery! I bought a Iwata Revolution and I my dreams came true. Trust me it’s the airbrush… an Iwata Revolution cost less than an Aztek , under $60.00 at Dixie but it performs like higher priced brushes. You can go wrong with it! Hope this helps!
I agree with Sherm. I, too have been using Tamiya Acrylics and I only have the Tamiya Basic Airbrush set. Works fine for me. I think the key is to get the best mix possible without drowning the color. I just follow the thinning guide as per the instructions that came with the Tamiya Basic Airbrush and it works all the time.
I got the better Tamiya HG Airbrush lately and it works even better especially for finer details.
I don’t think it’s the airbrush but I am not an expert on airbrush.
aj, use the highest percentage isopropyl alcohol you can find and thin about 1/1 so it’s about the consistancy of milk and it will spray fine. I have some 99% IPA from a friend in the chemical industry that works great but any will work. You may need to adjust your percentages some but that’s always worked for me. If you look at my Marder III post in the armor forum and Shermanfreaks “And now for something completely different” post and look at Renarts Tiger I you’ll see what an Aztec can do. They are good airbrushes, just not the best out there.
