I have been airbrushing for 3 years now , mostly using Gunze acrylics thinned with Isopropyl Alcohol , 50/50 mix . The results have been acceptable but I’ve always noticed that when I thinned the Gloss colours , the alcohol seemed to reduce the amount of gloss finish . I realize that this isn’t a new idea but I thought I might try and thin the Gunze acrylic with some Future clear 50/50 instead of the Isopropyl Alcohol . Well the results were outstanding ; A gloss finish I could see my reflection in . I was wondering if anybody else has tried this paint thinning method , it seemed to work on my first attempt ; The only thing I did notice that while spraying , the paint finish looked a little dry and ever so slightly grainy , but after 4 coates the finish appeared to level out quite well. An hour later it looked perfect . So am I on the right track to a better gloss finish than what I’m use to , or is this some sort of a fluke . Any comments and suggestions are most welcome . Kind Regards Helo 53 .[%-)]
hey Helo, i have tried this technique ever since reading the Complete Future by swanny. i have heard of people using tamiya acrylics with it and i decided to try it with the gunze too! the results are amazing as you described. Plus you dont need to clearcoat your finish to apply decals![:D] but i still use another topcoat of just plain future before i do my weathering. i also try adding alcohol to the mix.just a bit.
BTW, i just use distilled water with my Gunze paints together with some Mr.retarder. and i like the results[:)] the gloss does not dissapear unlike when using alcohol.
