Sheesh people, the guy asked for help, not your opinions on the show or anything else. To the op, just about any shade of bright orange would work, as previously stated they used what was available then. I built one using the Revell 69 Charger, sanded off the vinyl roof and used the AMT/MPC wheels, antenna and push bar with aftermarket decals, I don’t remember where I got them. I may have a set from that kit, not sure. A internet search should yield aftermarket decals. I used hemi Orange on mine.
Compressorman i’ll follow your build. Just picked up the MPC kit on Ebay. Now to hunt down that orange lol. Midnightprowler love to see pics of your build.
How big is a 1/16 scale car like the MPC kit? I am picturing a shoebox sized car
Here’s a video of a completed one - pretty nice

Another, more of a build video - painted with testors comp orange. You get an idea of the scale here as well

Or you could go the other direction [:P]
Compressorman,
Since there was no factory orange color for the 69 Charger, I’d get me some Hugger Orange and call it a day. Model Car World offers it in their line of excellent paints, it’s #6900. Ordering from them is a bit old school as you can’t order directly from the website, but have to call, fax or mail your order. Website is www.mcwautomotivefinishes.com Hope this helps.
I’ve been to that site - and yes, it’s like 1999 all over again. But the specific subject/color options are amazing. Just browsing the web, the color variations are quite broad. In the pics below you can see the different shades and one with a white/putty roll cage. I think you either pick a specific episode and model that car or do whatever you think looks good.
Nope, I’m sorry, but those pictures cannot be used to accurately model the General Lee. Huge inaccuracy that the doors actually open, sheeesh![;)]
Doh… good point!
BTW Cooter (Ben Jones) is my wife’s cousin, though I have yet to meet him.
The birth of the General Lee - turns out its orange because thats all Cooter had in the garage - a nice redish orange [H]

Man that looks great. I like the air cleaner off for carb maintenance. That’s a beauty!
Cool car, cool build. My second car was a 71 Charger that I bought from a kid for $150. He felt guilty for charging me that much. I was thinking, are you nuts? Yeah the car had rust and was aged, but for $150, I jumped on it. I was a teenager too and the price was right. I drove it for maybe 5 years. The body rusted out so bad that I had to bail water from the passenger compartment if driven during rain. When I braked the water would slosh back and fort from the front to the back seats. Lol. No joke. It had dual exhaust and when the pipes started rusting through, I got a nice rumble. I was in my glory.
That’s not a take over, it’s a contribution, and a fine one! This is what I was hoping to see on this thread. Thank you.
Chris
Thanks. The decals are actually vinyl just like the real car.
Vinyl? Did they come with the kit or were the sourced elsewhere? How do you apply?
They were aftermarket. I have no clue anymore where I got them, I built this 16+ years ago. They were a peel and stick thing and you got one chance to get them right lol.
That has to be scary. When doing transfers in the past a little soapy water buys a bit of time. After looking around I think I’m leaning towards competition orange like the video I posted.
So back to the power plant. Which motor comes with the MPC kit? ( waiting for delivery impatiently). 440 magnum or the 426. Looking at the interwebs it’s like the orange… 318, 383 and 440s and only in the movie they claimed to run the 426. Historically accurate is way out of the question here but I’m hoping for the 426 crossram beast.
The MPC/AMT kit has a Hemi IIRC. The Revell kit, which I recommend, as the other one has a incorrect body, the flush rear window versus the tunnelback, has a 440. The actual cars used in the show had a variety of engines, from a 318 to the Hemi I think. I am tryiiing to find out what engine the show claimed the General Lee had.
