Hi guys, so this is the only forum i’ve been on where you have the option to only use a URL to upload pictures…why not a computer upload???
I know of a couple who have their own personal gallery that you can upload to,Like Modelersalliance and Armorama,but who allows you to upload directly from your computer pics ? I would like to check them out.

I believe it is simply a matter of storage space. As long as there are big cloud storage sites available, I think FSM believes we can use those, a not-unreasonable attitude. Also, it saves any hassle about copyright issues.
It may be the only forum where linking is the only option to display images, but it’s the only option I use, even where uploading a file is an available choice. As Don notes, it’s an issue of storage space for forum managers, and every forum I belong to, that allows uploading or attaching files, has file size requirements, nearly all of them unique. So it’s easier for me to use a hosting site (mine is Photobucket), where I don’t have to worry about file space (yet), and link the images back to my posts.
Having personal galleries is a topic tangential to this one, but I agree with Don here, too, it’s probably an issue of space.
I don’t mind, I’ve got albums at Photobucket, and I also upload photos to Facebook, so I’m not too disappointed that FSM doesn’t have the feature.
Also, it’s the only way you’d ever be able to remove a photo from a posting, if the mood struck you. I have had several instances where I have posted something I found elsewhere, and have been contacted and asked to take the picture down.
I must say I have the opposite experience. I haven’t come across any site that allows you to load pics direct from your computer.

www.armorama.com and www.modelersalliance.com have their own galleries that you can store pictures in right from your computer.
It’s not that hard to use a hosting site such as Imageshack. It’s free up to 5GB and I currently have 597 photos there and have used less than 0.14GB of that.
Cost is the big issue as they would have to pay for the servers to have the room and the bandwidth involved.
Websites like Adobe, a few bodybuilding forums, a game forums allow you to upload directly, i don’t know of any other modeler website as this is the only one i go to.
But when i started the web back in the day using URL’s for images was the norm but now its rare that I personally see.
And also all i have is the REPLY button, how do i QUOTE a REPLY ?
Instead of clicking ‘reply’, click ‘use rich text formatting’. You will see the OP at the top, your input GUI below, and “Quote” (in green font) in between. Click on the green “Quote”.
I can guarantee you that linking as opposed to uploading isn’t rare. It a little unusual that FSM doesn’t have upload features, compared with other forums, but as we’ve discussed earlier in the thread, there are good reasons not to allow file uploads.
As far as other forums go, I use the following:
Hyperscale’s Plane Talking and Ship forums: (no uploads, as far as I can tell)
Treefrog Treasures Toy Soldier forum (uploads allowed, but with file size limits)
HZ-Forum (a German figure painter’s forum) (uploads allowed, but with file size limits)
Planet Figure (uploads, size limits)
Timelines-Historica (uploads, size limits)
e0264 (anime and other figures) (uploads, size limits)
Clubhouse (uploads, size limits)
Maschinenkrueger (no uploads, because the webmaster doesn’t want to deal with file size issues)
I’m sure everyone else can come up with a similar list from his own experience. As I said in my earlier post, I prefer using a hosting site and linking, rather than dealing with different file size limits across all of the forums I participate in. Linking works everywhere, with little additional fuss required of me.
When I started using the web, most ISPs provided a home page for each user, where one could post pictures and whatever. That has certainly changed. I changed ISPs, my new provider does NOT provide a home page site. My old page is still up at my old ISP though I don’t know for how long, and I cannot edit it anymore.
This kind of stuff makes my head hurt. I wish I could go back to my Apple II E.
