Finished up my Academy 1/72 Hurricane IIc. This is kit #2 after 23 years off, so I feel like I made some progress from the P-40N I posted a few weeks back.
I got a better hang of doing the panel lines (needed more soap!), and tried a bit of weathering aft of the guns and exhausts. I also scratch built a few parts in the pilot’s office, though those are now tucked away and invisible. (Pics in another post, a few weeks back.)
Still, I had a few problems. You can see where the lines from masking for the camo got real thick- especially noticable under the decals. And I smudged the wash around the yellow a bit too much. I almost had a complete disaster with the decals, as after spraying on dull coat they all blistered up. Thankfully, they settled down (mostly) by morning.
And I got a bit lazy. There’s supposed to be a stripe around the tail, but the decal ripped… and I wanted to get on to another kit… so I just said “Good enough.”
Still- learned some new stuff, had a lot of fun- and the bird ain’t too bad, I think.
I actually have this kit in the stash, about 72% finished, and it’s been sitting like that for about a year and a half for lack of paint and attention. It was one of my first models, back when I was still learning the ropes of building. I hope I can make something out of it. We’ll see. Thanks for the look! [:D][tup]
That’s a cool looking Hurri Jon [tup] you’ve done a really nice job. I wouldn’t worry too much I think that everybody has suffered from the old overly thick paint at some stage or another.
Considering this is kit 2 after such a long absence from the hobby I think you are doing very well. The model looks good, the weathering/painting is nicely done. Shame bout the decals, but don’t let that hold you back, keep building and having fun. Regards, Darren.
Pretty darn nice Jon. Its good that you are critical of yourself… it will only lead to improvement. Don’t get so critcal though that you stop having the fun you are so obvioulsy having. If oyu get a ridge where a decal will be… scrape it down and nobody will ever know.[;)]
Jon and Joe-Try a pastel wash…chalk pastel powder, water and just a drop or 2 of soap. very forgiving and easy to wipe it all off and start again if need be.
