Themes for Your Models?

My primary theme is New Jersey. Started with BB-62 (I now have built 5 real world historic and 2 alternate history) and now have 2 BB-16, SSN-786, the original Gundalow, NCC-1975, plus multiple ships named after places and people of my (adopted) home state. And aircraft, fire engines, and trains built here or operated by the NJ ANG, or have a historic connection.
There are also models of personal interest for my wife like a MASH diorama, her first car, and others that I build for her.
Also What-Ifs, and a few random items just for fun.

I generally don’t follow themes. I’ve tried building to themes for a specific contest(Red,White, & Blue or celebrate the anniversary of D-Day) but I usually lose interest in the build. I attribute it to my undiagnosed adult on-set ADHD (SQUIRREL!!!)

Another time I actually followed a theme was in building US jet fighters that flew in the Texas Air National Guard. I actually started this with a single build of a Tamiya F-16C Falcon a few years earlier, then came back in 2020 with the Century Series that I did (so actually two themes). The F-101B Voodoo and F-102A Delta Dagger were TX ANG birds, the latter being the one that future President George W Bush flew.

I’ve been following an alternate universe approach in my Gundam builds (redesigning classic suits specifically from the zeta era). Other than that I’ve been just really doing airliners!

I’m trying to build as many NASA aircraft as possible; they used a combination of easy to find planes with funky paint schemes, and some truly obscure weirdness  I have a T-34 Mentor and a T-38 Talon under the belt, and a Twin Otter and F-104 on the bench waiting for NASA decals to arrive :slightly_smiling_face:

Today … its British aircraft from WW1-Cold war.
In the past it was Axis aircraft and armor.
A few car models and figures get thrown in from time to time, too.

There is so much great stuff out there now, I needed to narrow it down a bit. Since I was in the Army and I enjoy military stuff, I decided I would work on things that I either drove or rode in. As far as cars go, I don’t enjoy them as much as military models, but I picked up a few. Either ones that I have owned or one exception for one I always wished I could afford.

Fly Models make a 1/72 scale kit of the Ames AD-1 oblique wing testbed, replete in NASA colors. I have one coming in a couple of weeks. If you are interested, I’ll post open-box photos to show what you get.

AMP makes a 1/72 kit of the Northrop M2F2/3 lifting body, but it is horrifyingly expensive. But the alternatives are resin or vac-form kits. And Mach-2 makes the X-24A/B lifting bodies in kinda-sorta-injection molded plastic, but I think everyone is better off with vac-forms - or scratch building!
