The Ten Rules of Modeling

After reading some of the posts I’ve came up with a little list of rules for scale modelers. This includes everyone. Please feel free to add to it.

  1. The kit you want really badly, and have searched years for, is only found when you have no money.

  2. When using tweezers, the part you are holding can and will be launched into the wilds and never seen alive again. The distance is also proportional to how badly you need the part.

  3. The paint you thought was a perfect match, isn’t

  4. A dropped loaded brush will always land point down, but only after hittting everything on the way down.

  5. Ditto for a dropped knife, but it usually involves blood too.

  6. After reading all the hype and hearing how good the soon to be released kit is, it isn’t.

  7. There is no kit of the particular variant you need to complete your set.

  8. The amount of damage to a dropped kit is in direct proportion to the amount of time and money invested in it.

  9. There are NO cheap kits. (AM, PE, etc. etc. etc.)

  10. Only after finishing a kit will you find out that your research is wrong.

I know there are more out there, so lets hear them.

  1. The one reference picture you need and can’t find will show up in a magazine article a week after you finish your model.

after heavily converting a model that costs you a fortune they release it a week later for half the price

roadkill i resemble those remarks. interesting hadnt thought about modeling like that. they are right on target.

…how 'bout altering this one:

  1. The kit you want really badly, and have searched years for, is only found after you’ve spent 8 months altering & modifying a much later version.

happened to me with with accurate minitures P-51A…almost to the month after i finished back-dating the Monogram P-51B to a CBI Air Commandos airplane flown by Colonel Cochran…eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

does this qualify ?..as a rule or a means to apply for a personal straight-jacket…

the amount of damage your cat does to the model is proportional the the cost and time you spent on the model

photoetch is sharp

the one part you need is the one part that doesn’t come with the kit

the chances of a bottle of glue falling and shattering/spilling is exponencially linked to the cost, rarity, how well the glue works, how much is left, and how close to the model it is.
