This is a dio I finished this last spring for a local model show. It depicts the alleged UFO abduction of Travis Walton, a logger working in the Sitgreaves National Forest near Snowflake, Arizona. Took me over two years to finish it, as I have kids that take up a lot of my time. Wanted to do something different, that tapped into UFO lore a little bit. It’s pretty much completely scratchbuilt except for the figure, which is a modified Fujimi truck driver. Sorry about the pics-they were taken at the show. Hope you like it.
It’s actually fiberboard with a photo glued to it. Nothing fancy. I took my Jeep up into the woods and spent a day photographing trees because I couldn’t find anything on the 'net. Then I had it blown up at the local photo place. I think in retrospect I should have extended the background stand/scenery the entire width of the base, and not just enough to support the model. Oh well.
The light beam is 1/8" thick blue acrylic tube from the local plastics supplier. The UFO is also 1/8" acrylic, and was thermoformed out of a 12" diameter disc to achieve a slight dish/dome shape to it. I had to have that part done in Denver at a specialty plastics shop. Not cheap and I wouldn’t do it again. The side wall is just styrene “For Sale” sign plastic reinforced on the inside with thicker styrene and PVC. I lighted it with LED flashlight parts.
