So, i counted my kits yesterday as i cleaned up my house and organized things. my collection of unfinsished-started kits is now up to 47, and my overall collection is up to 51… im just wondering if anyone else has this problem…!? if not, lets just hear how many kits you have in “your stash”
293—and mine is quite small, compared to some.
It’s not the number in your stash that should concern you. It’s the ratio of completed to stashed that should concern you.
Mine is 4/293…[]
I’m strictly a “one kit at a time” builder. I open the kit, finish it, and then open the next one. Therefore, my current started stash is exactly 1 kit. My overall stash is entirely another matter. According to my latest computer inventory…this is a clue by itself…I now have 309 kits, 296 of which are 1:35 military subjects. However, the inventory is off by a few. I won 6 kits at a contest last weekend, but they’ve been added to a stack of kits I’m trying to sell at this Saturday’s local model Swap Meet. So, my stash may drop down to 300 or so by Sunday…
Heck, I’m a piker compared to you all. I’ve ‘only’ got 15 or 20. Started = 3, finished and in my posession = 0, so I guess I’m a tail end charlie.
32 with about 4 in progress. I’m trying to avoid ebay like the plague, otherwise I’d be over 50.
i have 2 stashes, kits i bought in the past month (since i’ve returned to the hobby) which includes 7 armor kits, and my stash from about 2 years ago when i used to build 1/72nd scale aircraft, about 43 kits, out of which i have two b-24s, and two hellcats started from way back…
The subject of our collections of unbuilt kits comes up pretty frequently around here. Some folks have stashes that are closer to 1,000 than 500!
Just for fun, I’m posting my stash, which is only 21 kits. I have not bought any new kits for more than two years. I’m determined to build, trade, or trash these kits before I buy another one.
In the stash (about half of these were gifts!):
Revell 1/144 scale B-52G (gift)
Roden 1/72 Fokker D.7 (Alb.-built, early), with a Part PE set (gift)
Roden 1/72 Bristol F2.b with a Part PE set (gift)
ESCI 1/72 F4C National Guard Phantom (gift)
(an example built by another modeler is here:

Fujimi 1/72 F-14D Tomcat

Monogram 1/48 P-38
Monogram 1/48 OS2U Kingfisher
Monogram 1/48 Grumman F9F Panther (gift)
Monogram 1/48 Spitfire IX (gift)
Monogram 1/48 Stuka Ju 87G-1 (gift)
Revell 1/32 P-38 (gift)

Testors/Italeri 1/35 Panzer IV H (gift)
MPC Millennium Falcon
Airfix 1/600 H.M.S. Hotspur (gift)
Revell Germany 1/1,200 U.S.S. Hornet
Monogram 1/800 U.S.S. Nimitz (gift)
– Came in a package with a Monogram 1/72 scale F-4J (the F-4J is now built).
Revell “SnapTite” Nautilus Submarine (scale unknown)
– A pretty cool model of the submarine from “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”
It does not look like the model used in the movie, but recreates the look and feel
from the book.
See here for another modeler’s example:

Total: 21
Regards,
I currently have 43 kits in my stash. That doesn’t include a couple of Hasegawa weapons sets, several garbage kits that have been relegated to spare parts and the one kit I have on special order at the LHS.
Rob Gronovius wins this, hands down. Remember the photos of his stash a while back ? He has more unbuilt kits than my LHS.
I have a 100+ stash (might be 110) and that’s little league compared to a lot forum members!
Most of my stash is aircraft, I have got 2 tanks, 1 racing car, an X-Wing and stuff for aircraft dioramas (starter and refuelling trucks, personel, ground equipment etc)
Let’s see, right now, I have 159 built and 256 unbuilt (some in the US and some here in Japan).
I have three or four kits started and in various stages of tinkering, but there’s ever only one on the workbench at any given time.
There’s a big “Modeller’s Flea Market” held a few times a year here, so about once a year I take a good hard look at the stash and cull whatever I’ve lost interest in. Before I moved from Osaka to Gunma for my new job last July, I let go of about 135 kits! The extra space and the extra cash made the move a little bit easier!
Of course, I’ve bought about 30 kits since the move. And built only one…sheesh!
Awaiting build: 8 total kits…3 started
Built: 964 most 1/35 armor, most US, most WWII, most some variety of Sherman.
Er, here’s part of mine…
Matt
My built list is about a dozen kits, and my unbuilt stash is about 2 dozen. I build one or two at a time… sometimes three… but I never put them away unfinished before starting another. I generally try to keep it current size, only buying a new one when another gets completed.
What I’m trying to figure out is where am I going to put all these kits? I’m running out of shelf space! [:)]
Oh, that’s easy: just build a 1:1 scale model of another house…
[(-D]
Aha! Rob Gronovius and Matt Usher are really the same person…that, or one is the other’s evil twin, Skippy…[(-D]
Just out of curiousity, Matt, how many non-work-related kits have you completed?
Matt, I’ve seen your stash before and I have to say, not only is it big but very well organized! I only have about 40 or so - light weight compared to some of you.
Hmmm… so a theif could get into Matt’s place, swipe 30-40 kits without him knowing [:-,] Interesting[:-^]
I have about 150+ and nearly 40 completed, 4 on the go and a trip to the LHS comming[:D]
Now that’s the question, and I think you’re the first person to ask. To be honest, I had to think about it. In the ten years I’ve been at FSM, I’ve built constantly, with at least one model on the bench all the time. But in that time, I’ve only finished one model that wasn’t work-related. All the rest have been for FSM or Scale Auto, our sister magazine. But I still go to the hobby shop every week, and clearly I keep buying kits I intend to get to eventually!
I should also note that this picture is a couple of years old. Last fall I culled the collection fairly heavily and sent several boxes of kits to the troops. (Something I’d highly recommend; there are great instructions and addresses at www.ipmsusa.org).

Now THAT’s a good reason to have a stash. Otherwise, having a big stash (or even a small one like mine) seems to me to be a waste. If I thought rationally about spending the money, then I’d be better off buying tools or paints, or reference material for the kit I’m working on than buying another kit that I won’t get to for a long time.
Actually, that’s what I’ve done these past few years.
It’s just so much easier to buy a kit than it is to build one, and that goes for everyone! Some of the folks who build the most models around here also seem to have the largest stashes.
But anyway, if you’re going to have a large stash, then sending parts of it to troops who will appreciate them is a good use for that stash.

-Drew
