Hello all! I am new to the beautiful community of FSM and a year into modeling. Since the forum said to introduce myself, I decided to comply.

I am a 27 year old from Texas. I have always wanted to get into modeling, ever since I was a kid and Wal-Mart would sell models. But the fact that I had to paint all pieces and glue them always scared me a little bit. I would try to build paper models as a kid of Star Wars ships, which led me to my first hobby; collecting Star Wars figures. But that curiosity for modeling was always there.

I’m also a history buff, so last April 13th, I decided to take my wife to watch the Titanic re-release, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragedy. While we waited for the movie to start, however, she asked me to take her to Hobby Lobby. I didn’t think much of it, but while she looked around, I found my way to the model section. I decided to pick up Academy’s 1:600 Titanic… and it began.

The next day (we got home late from the movie), I opened my model and realized I was going to need a lot of tools. I started reading up on the hobby and went back to the store to pick up paints, hobby knives, tweezers, etc. For a beginner, I’d like to think I amassed a rather respectable set of tools.

Well, to this day, I have not been able to finish that Titanic–it’s about 1/3rd ready, but I realize I may have started with a model a tad too advanced for me, plus I really don’t want to ruin that Titanic. I took a step back and instead built a Revell 1/77 Ford Tri-Motor, learning a few more skills in the process, and I painted it to look like the Tri-Motor in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. It’s my first finished model, and I’m rather proud of it (I want to post some photos soon). I had to take a break for a while because we moved to a new house, but since I set up a whole room just for my modeling and collections, and now I’m able to work a few minutes here and there on my models. I’m currently working on a Revell Huey Hog, still picking up skills. As soon as that’s done, I’m going back to finish the Titanic. I already have a backlog waiting, though. My interests are ships, planes and helicopters, particularly historic and military ones.

Well, I just subscribed to the magazine and website, I’m really loving the hobby (I’m a very patient guy, so it’s really down my alley), and my wife really encourages the hobby: a plus in my book! I’m currently looking into buying a compressor and airbrush, since I keep reading how much better your models can be with one of those. Hopefully I can have it by this weekend and complete my Huey Hog.

I apologize for the wall of text, but that’s my introduction. I’m really looking forward to learning from all of your amazing skills! I’m loving the community around here!

P.S. - A quick question: can someone tell me what the model is, at the top of the website next to the FineScale Modeler logo? I’d really like to build one of those!

Also look forward to seeing your Trimotor. I’ve got one of those “on the pile” trying to figure out which trim to dress it up in. I can always use a bit of inspiration!

Welcome! Its good to have a wife that allows you to feed your addiction to plastic. In these forums we call them " she whom you must obey" (swymo) Your post tells me your full of enthusiasem and chomping at the bit to get some builds under your belt. Awseme!!! I believe the plane at the top of the web page is a Nate in Manchurian markings, It was a feature story in a recent issue of the mag. ( I forget what issue but it was about 3 months ago.) I may be wrong and if so the guys will let me know. Thats the beauty of this forum. The exchange of information is increadable!

PS. I tend to be a bit goofy so dont let me put you off. Just tell me to go glue myself and we will get along just fine.

Well, I’ve been on a few internet forums, but this is by far the nicest one I’ve been in! I can see I’ve come to the right place–not to mention I’m learning so much just by lurking around the site. Thanks for all the warm welcomes!

I had to drive an hour out of town for work today, which I took advantage of to stop at a Hobby Lobby out there, and took the plunge on an Airfix Stormforce compressor (with the 40% off coupon) and a Neo Gravity Feed Dual Action Airbrush. Time to “brush up” on my skills! I might have a lot of questions soon. I did some research and those seem to have good reviews–any one know anything about those items?

Let me see if I have photos from my Tri-Motor that I could post in the meantime.

Here are a few photos of my Tri-Motor. Keep in mind, this was my first finished model. I tried to add my own brand of weathering, and I still haven’t put the decals on. Still, I was proud of it! (That was before I found this site!)

welcome to the forum, and nice build - unusual kit. The Ki-27 next to the logo is in Manchukuo markings by the way (Japanese puppet state of Manchuria, China, during WWII if you didn’t already know). I’ve built that kit just because of the unusual and colorful markings.

Welcome to the forums Neo!!! I guarantee that you are in the right place to not only enjoy the hobby but, to also enhance it immensely. The folks here are a wonderful and helpful lot. That is if they are fed a healthy amount of photos on a regular basis. I like your Tri-motor. Not bad at all for your first build. As far as your airbrush as compressor goes I strongly suggest you ask loads of questions here, check out a variety of sites and videos, pick up a how to book or two and then practice, practice, practice. I can tell you are well infected with the modeling itch. There’s no going back to your normal way of life now. Let the stashing begin.

Thanks for all the encouragement!

I went back and purchased the Sept. 2012 issue, as recommended. I will have to pick up the Hasegawa Nakajima one day! I’m so thankful to my wife–she likes this hobby and encourages me to work on it more.
