The Salt Technique, a WIP

THis is a repaint of a Humvee i finished a while ago. I would like some input on how to finish this humvee from those of you who have seen how a vehicle would rust in Iraq(desert) in 5 years without a repaint.

Using a brush and some water, brush the water onto the vehicle lightly. When moist enough to hold the salt drop on a pinch of salt to the area.

see how salt is visible and has not been absorbed by the water.

Next after the vehicle is lightly sprayed with a few coats you’ll want to let the paint dry a while.

see how the paint sets over the salt. What you want to do next is lightly scrape the paint off with a toothpick.

Notes

chip in areas where wear is frequent.

be careful about it

dont overload on salt.

dont use sugar

Now how should i finish the weathering on this? It has sat in iraq for six years seeing hrad usage without being repainted. Take it from their.

Ain’t that much on a Humvee that’ll rust…

Especially the hood, it’s all fiberglass…

hans is correct. the hood is fiberglass. (found that one out the hard way hans…[:-^]). short of the undersides and the “bumper” nothing else is gonna rust. even with those areas, (cant speak for “current conditions”) the soldiers who drive them will maintain them and keep them rust free! [;)]

Consider the climate as well. Given, Iraq does have areas that are more “humid” than others, I don’t think that you’ll find too much rust on the trucks.

For example, trucks I fell in on during my first deployment got to country brand new, had been there for almost three years and had about 250,000 mi on them. Besides being really dirty and beat up, I don’t remember hardly any rust. Pointed out by camo, The only places that you probably will see some rust is going to be on any “homemade” bumper, armor, or fuel can carriers.

Remember too that all trucks are kept outside and are subject to frequent “sand blasting”.

I’ll look through my old pics and see if I can dig up any that will give you a better idea.

Hello all,

I don’t think rust is really ment here, as what comes from under the sand color is the original woodland camo. That leads me to a question to all who “been there, done that” - how bad does the sand paint flake and would the soldiers in Iraq really leave the truck without touching up for five yaers? Would a humvee need some kind of overhaul that gets it a repaint in that span of time? Thanks in advance for the answers. To all modellers - don’t make them babies dirtier than they really were - or admit not going for realism, that’s cool too. Happy modelling and have a nice day

Pawel

Thanks for the input guys, especially about figerglass parts on the humvee. Never knew it. Now as to finish it to give it a dusty look. how would i do that?

im pretty sure we got what he was trying to say pawel but there’s always room for misunderstanding. [;)] if the sand is flaking…its probably from the constant “sand blasting” effect from sand storms and just basic wind. any “wear” would be minimal (near where the soldiers enter and exit the vehicle). so, if a vehicle was just “left” there for five years in the elements it would be stripped down to the aluminum frame…lol. someone would touch it up. there are too many anal officer’s out there (no offense rob & other’s) that wouldnt let all the above happen. not to mention if its my vehicle (im in charge of it and maintain it) i would have to take care of it during the down time! just my [2c]

Alright so i’m trying to decide to do this as a what if as an Iraqi vehicle in 3 or four years maybe or just leave it as is as an experiment. What should i do?

well, it is just paint…can always put another coat on or whatever. its your build jad…make it how you want to. [;)]

T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U for posting this. I have been seeing the word ‘The Salt Technique’ often in the magazines or forums but I didn’t really understand it [%-)] until I saw your tread. BINGO! Now I understand how it really works. English is not exactly my first language… American Sign Language (ASL) is so pictures really helps! So posting those great pictures helped me understand how to do it right. I will definitely give it a shot one day…

Thank you again! [#toast]

thnaks for the kind words deafpanzer. I am deaf in one ear so life is hard…sometimes… Anyways, i know how you feel

don’t mean to some off in the wrong way or anything, but i served in the army for 9 years with HMMWV’s, with two tours in iraq and afghan. i don’t think i have ever seen chipping like that before. most of the paint is CARC paint which is tougher than nails, and like they said in the earlier post, the hood is fiberglass. the crews took care of the vehicles. keep in mind that at least one day per week, the crew is dedicated to motorpool day. nothing but taking care of the vehicles. the most you would find in iraq would be dusty dirty unkept trucks, not rusting vehicles. i’ll try to find some of my old pics while i was over there if your interested.

ok, like i think i said earlier i know nothing about modern vehicles. I was just playing aroung with this and so far what everyone has said about the HMMWV is true so thankls for the info.
