Is anyone aware of this book? and where a copy might be found?
TIA
I found the book under google. Checked the used book search engines and Amazon.com for US and UK. No copies currently available.
Does anyone have a copy of this book?
I’m looking for a drawing of HMS Dolphin (allegedly there is a plan of the Dolphin or similar 1745 establishment 24 gun 6th rate around page 87).
Thanks in advance.
I don’t have a copy; it’s too expensive for my blood, and the content is such that I figure I’d find myself only looking at it for a few minutes at a stretch. The library of the university where I work has one, and I’ve looked things up in it several times. It’s a big, oversized reference book, containing only the very most essential (and thoroughly reliable) data about each ship. The illustrations, if I remember correctly, consist entirely of photographs of Admiralty drawings. They vary tremendously in their detail and usefulness. (The ones for H.M.S. Victory, for instance, are so vague as to be almost useless for model building purposes.) I don’t know what it has to offer about H.M.S. Dolphin.
Copies of the book seem to be scarce; I don’t think many were printed in the first place, and it’s been out of print for years. More recently, Mr. Lyon and another author, Rif Winfield, published a sequel called The Sail and Steam Navy List, 1815-1889. That one’s still in pring - at a retail price of $95.00.
Your best bet is to check a good reference library that has a good xerox machine. If that doesn’t work, let me know and send me a mailing address, and I’ll take a stroll over to the library. But not today. It’s snowing and freezing cold, and the library’s quite a trudge from my office.
