The Real F-14 named MISS MOLLY

Hello All,

I hope that someone here can help me. I’m looking for photos of the real F-14 from VF-111 that was named “MISS MOLLY” off of the CARL VINCENT. Are they any? I’ve been doing internet searches for them and all I can find are photos of finished models.

If you have any or know of where I can find them, please email me at PTConsultingNHR@aol.com. Thank you very much.

Garth

Run a “google” search for F-14 Miss Molly. On the first two pages I found a couple URLs with pics of Miss Molly, #200 of the VF-111 SunDowners. One is http://bp0.blogger.com/_13lJY9ifRa8/RmMI4rkJlPI/AAAAAAAAAA8/Kw4ZXShr7J8/s1600-h/VF111NL200+MissMolly1.jpg and the other is http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?act=Print&client=printer&f=113&t=133818

Good luck with your search!

Mike,

Thank you sir.

Ya know - AFTER I sent that message and went to bed, I realized that I typed VINCENT instead of VINSON. D’Oh. I feel like an idiot!!!

I’m confused. MISS MOLLY goes on the right side? Every model I’ve seen of that F-14 has it on the left side.

Which is correct?

Garth

Garth,

I have served on 3 different Aircraft Carriers, including the Carl Vinson. As far as i can remember, all pilot names/call signs/ Plane Captain names were all on the port side of the aircraft. I have never seen a “Bird Name” on a modern fighter or bomber. Not even the CAG Bird. By no means am I trying to say I have seen it all. You have seen it so, clearly it exists. it was most likely a bird that was “dolled up” for a photo shoot or maybe an airshow?

Regards,

Jeff

EDIT: I typed that before I clicked on Mike’s links. Photos don’t lie. Then again, maybe it was on both sides?

Ahoy PT,

What’s in a name anyway? When I was stationed on the USS Enterprise out of Alameda, CA, we shared the pier with the Carl Vinson. We called her the Chukky V.

Hi … thanks. That’s what I’m trying to figure out … the SUPER SCALE sheet I’ve got only has one MISS MOLLY … leading me to believe it was just on one side …

Well, as a naval historian - I should know a bloody ship’s name …

HI The superscale decals are only half right. There is supposed to be nose art on both sides of Miss Molly. Zotz Decals made one that is considered correct but they are sold out at this time and you would need to check with them to see whin or if they are going to make more.

Thank you. But, I can’t really afford to go buy another set …

Hi If your only choice is the superscale sheet then I would go for it. I thank it would look great.

Thank you.

What gray would you use on that F-14? And, did it have a white underbody or was it overall gray? Was the antiglare panel a darker gray? I’m not weathering it …

I agree with Jeff, I think the plane was “dolled up” for a photo shoot or airshow with the name. If you look at all the other pics on the arcforums page of that same A/C (200), there are no names on it. But I also like the look of the name and I’d put it on the right side of the A/C where it is in the pic.

As far as what color, I think its real close to “Light Gull Grey”, FS 26440. From looking at all the pics it appears that the bottom is also grey, and not white. I don’t see any evidence of the “anti-glare panel” being painted a different color either. Just my opinion… I could definitely be wrong. LOL!

OK … Thank you you guys. Appreciate the input.
