The Proteous

Here’s a good one.

Why did the only Proteous model I have ever seen, Till Lately, when I can’t fit it in my budget in NO way resembled the actual ship in the Movie? That is a Kit either in Plastic or Resin that I would like to build. I thought Movie ship was the cat’s Meow!

I now know there’s one out there, Never could find out the cost or scale.

The old Aurora kit was based off of the cartoon TV series Proteus, but the new Moebius kit is off of the actual movie version. I was a kid when this cartoon was on Saturday mornings so the Aurora kit was aimed at kids like me with the hero voiced by the venerable Ted Knight.

Yeah, that new Moebius kit is expensive.

The ship in the cartoon series was called Voyager, and as you can tell was superior in its capabilites to the sub in the movie. But, that’s a cartoon I used to watch every Saturday. The movie sub was quite a piece of work when it showed up on the screen. Very well done.

When EPCOT first opened up they had a simulator ride based on the same idea. You were shrunk down in your sub and injected into a vein to observe a medical procedure by another sub or given a mission of your own. The effects were quite well done and included such things as a shoot down a needle, some manuvewring aas well as bobbing in the fluid which had a tendency of actually making some people a little sea sick. That could explain why they did away with it and went to Star Tours. The original building eventually became another attraction, and was used to show medical and health displays.
