I’ve just gotten back into armor modeling after an absence of over twenty years. I’m amazed at how far technology has advanced in the interim. The amount of information today is overwhelming, and I’m having trouble absorbing it all.
My questions is: Is there a good, comprehensive reference book on the subject of armor modeling? Something that covers everything from glues to paint to PE to airbrushing techniques and goes into detail on the reletive merits of each?
Before I get started on my expensive kits ( a 1/16 Tamiya Tiger I, Trumpeter 1/16 1942 T-34/76 and a 1/35 Academy Tiger I with interior detail), I want to know what I’m doing!
There is atleast one very good book on this subject :
Tony Greenland’s Panzer Modelling Masterclass.
He goes through all fases of modeling, from tools, kits and paints to PE and weathering.
Barnes and noble have it. But only as a used copy.

Welcome back to the hobby! There are several of us starting up a Group Build on the Trumpeter 1/16 T34 that you may want to join. It’s a nice long, slow build that has a good variety of background/expertise that you could leverage as you get your feet wet again if you would like. Just post on the thread a little lower down if you are interested.

You may wnt to check with the publisher for availability new, (Windrow & Green publishing) I believe I got my copy through the Military Book Club.
Shepard Paine’s book’s are still really good, I think anyway. His stuff still stands the test of time.

[:D]welcome to the forums,i have 2 books from Osprey,intermediate military vehicle modelling,and airbrush painting techniques. both are good books ,so you realy have a choice of what books to get,it is all up to you what you want to do.have fun.

Many thanks, guys! I’ll check out the T-34 group build. I think I know were I can find a copy of Tony Greenland’s book locally. We are fortunate to have a first-class hobby shop in this area (Bridgetown Hobbies/The Military Corner) in Portland, Oregon. They usually have a pretty good stock of books, and tomorrow I’ll brave the traffic and head over there for a looksee.
Seventrs; Since you are in the Portland area, be sure to check out Powell’s Bookstore on Burnside. The military section there is second to none. There is even a small section on military modeling.
And to go along with all the books , you have this right ehre to learn nearly everything about building. It has been where I have learned just about everything.
I still rely on both of ShepPaines books especially how to build dios which I have had for 20 years (and is it dogeared) this I think is probably the single best book I have ever owned.
