The Monogram Mafia Has Arrived! (Lotta Pics)

Just a taste of the work being done by my crew on these classic kits for you mugs dat think a Monogram kit is junk… That just ain’t true, and I’m gonna prove it right here… Anyone got a problem wit’ dat?

The crew has taken some classic kits and done 'em proud, and best of all, they did it fast and had FUN… They also have to build, not one, but TWO (or more) Monogram kits to get “Made” in “Del Costruzione Nostra”, “This Build of Ours”… I present to you, The Monogram Mafia"

Here’s some of their work:

Troublemaker- 1/48 F-80

Troublemaker-1/48 Hawker Hurricane

Kermit-1/72 F-82 Twin Mustang

Kermit-1/48 MiG 15 UTI

Hammer-1/48 Ju 87D

Bondoman-3-in1 kit (three kits in one box but counts as only ONE build): 1/72 Boeing F4B-4, Curtiss F-11C Goshawk, Curtiss P-6E

Satch IP-1/48 SB2-C Helldiver

Satch IP-1/48 F6F Hellcat

That’s it for now folks, but there’s gonna be more to come from these guys (and gal) and the other mugs involved in it, who haven’t yet finished any of their builds… This feels like one of the more sucessfull group builds so far, and if you missed it I wouldn’t lament, because I think there will be a “Round Two” after more folks see what can be done with these wonderful old Classic kits… And I didn’t even need to leave a horse-head in anyone’s bed…

sarcasm on Talk about making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear! Those old and tired monogram kits are horrible to build, whay not build Tamiya with loads of AM resin and PE instead?
You have better have some stocks in the putty and sandpaper industry before starting those build. And how horribly inaccurate! I heared the wing span of the Stuka is 0,001 to short! sarcasm off

Great builds!

Lots of great work there!! often followed the works on GB section [Y][Y]

Sarcasm on Roger that… Everyone knows you can’t build a good 1/48 aircraft kit for under $70.00 plus A/M parts…Sarcasm off

Hans, are you trying to convince us that it is the modeller not the model? [:D]

Great looking stuff! If I ever get caught up on my other GB and other projects, I may have to give the Mafia a go.

Jim

more courage needed to do a matchbox or an airfix olk kit gb [H] (and probably causes out of stocks of goods needed to finish on most vendors)

Hans, I am sold!!! It is your attention to Monogram/Revell that got me back into them. I have more of them on my shelf than I ever had in the past!!!

Yeah, but if it’s an old Airfix or Matchbox GB, it cant be Mafia… gotta be Rugby Club or Cricket League or ‘such and such united’…[;)]

[B] probably yes but the point was not on the name [:D] see some 1/48 kit from monogram , (mine have only an old ah-1g 1/72) and surely are better than old two british storic brand .

Also remind some kit seen in some american tv series that surely was an 1/48 ww2 fighter from monogram!

As the name not so sure mafia starded by monogram in usa (i came from south italy)

That’s one of the reasons i keep me out of 48 scale kits [B]

Great stuff. I used to love the fact that the US wings folded, thus allowing more shelf space. Too bad, you can’t get them for a buck anymore. [;)]

Hans von Hammer if round 2 does happen please I would like to join in. Most of my builds are Revell/Monogram kits, I still have 3 P-61 kits that need building along with 4 P-51D kits a B-25, 2 P-40B kits all in 1/48 with a couple of car kits oh and an F-5 and 2 F-14 kits. Nope I aint gonna give up my Revell/Monogram kits.

Nice to see my ‘Silk purse out of a sow’s ear’ is getting around [:D]

Nice builds there, just completed a Typhoon myself… one question about that Hurricane, is that the one that was molded in dark grey and black, I have the same kit but am missing the instructions. Do you know where I can get a copy of them?

Nothing wrong with revellogram at all. Just needs more work and attention than the average sissygawa[H]

Richard

[8-)] i miss this kermit … sissygawa? what is? a p[:#] brand? [:P]

Job well done. I enjoy the Monogram kits for their simplicity, allowing a build when I need to break away from sawing and sanding resin and PE for projects that typically linger for months on end.

I have a grand total of 3 models, so please bear with me.

I got jazzed seeing the F-20, so I thought what the heck, do a quick search over the internet and see if I can find it. Not happening, other than one on ebay. (I’ll check my local shop and see what he has to say)

So you guys just collect these and have them around? How do you know what kind of quality you are getting, or do you just buy some to see what they are like? I understand there are reviews of some models.

I just barely started a Monogram AD-6 Skyraider (85-5312), then put it down and have almost completed a Revell P-40B (I think the model is 85-5209), and just getting a good start on a Testor P-47D (I think model 520).

The Revell was the first one, and I pretty much trashed it; nonetheless, it seemed to have the worst fit. The Testors is fitting and looking much nicer, still a pretty simple kit. The Monogram I have not done much with, but it appears the most detailed, and definitely the most complex, at least in part count.

The Monogram seemed like a good practice model for me, it was not too expensive ($22 at my local shop), but not so simple as to be boring. But presumable, just because I find another Monogram, does not mean that I will get a model at the same level of complexity and fit, correct?

It will take me some time to get the Skyraider done, but I don’t know where to start looking from there. The local shop is very helpful, he points me towards Trumpeter and Mini-something, (or something-mini).

Any insight is welcome.

Thanks.

Since getting “serious” about this hobby and comparing an old Revellogram kit vs a new Eduard, Tamiya etc, . Although it is easy to see the difference (both in detail AND price), there is something to be said about the shy little date with a good personality (that doesn’t want wine and steak). [;)] Thanks for the great GB idea Hammer. [B]

mgh,

A lot of us have been doing this for years and have quite a stash built up (I know a couple of guys whose stash rivals most hobby shops). With regards to quality, well sometimes you get what you pay for and sometimes you don’t. A good rule of thumb is USUALLY the older a kit is, the more work it will need fit and finishwise, however this is not always true. Read the online reviews here at FSM and other sites, find a local model club and join it, you’ll hear all about the new kits and the old ones as well. Go to contests and talk to other modelers, hang around after the show and wait for the entrants to pick up their models. Ask them about the kit if your interested in it, they’ll tell you all about it usually. Take money when you go to contests, you can pick up kits for pennies on the dollar. If you do go to a contest and they ask for judges, step up and judge, you’ll learn about the kits and how to build better models in one fell swoop. As for the kits you’ve mentioned, those are three classic kits ( the Testors is originally an old Hawk kit if it’s the one I’m thinking of). Put up some pics, we’d like to see them.

Thanks for the help. I do need to contact the person at the closest IPMS club. It is 50 miles away, so not sure I could make any of the meetings, but maybe they could help me out. I would love to go to a show. Nearest/closest is Ogden Utah, in October!

I have meant to ask the guy at the hobby shop if he knew of any local clubs.

Thanks again.

I’d NEVER say that, Jim… Of course it’s the model… That’s why nobody ever wins at competitions with a $12.00 Monogram kit over a 100.00 Tamigawa… [;)]

Given the sucess of this GB so far, especially this early in the game, I’m sure there will be a MM Round 2, once this one’s complete…
