I’ve begun my next project, but the figures I ordered were of poor-quality resin. Luckily/unfortunately I ordered 2 sets. Either the molds or the resin is bad, or they were skimping on the resin. Unfortunately, the artillery figures that I wanted for this project are either non-existent or already built (sic) along with the howitzer and put on the market for a steep price. They say you get what you pay for, and I sure did. Be advised that the last pic is the one that shows the substandard resin figures.
Well, all things considered, I finally finished the figures. They are donning the dirt and sweat of a hot summer in the 'Nam on a firebase. That is the only reason they are not wearing their flak jackets and gas mask cases. Now it’s onto the howitzer. All comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.
They look great! Looking forward to all the action in whatever scene you’re planning. Figures make models so much better.
The figures look awesome. Especially the red mud on their boots, and trousers.
Thank you for the kind comments. I finally finished the build and priming of the howitzer. Now it’s off to painting, weathering and decaling it along with the boxes, extra rounds and aiming stakes.
Hello all. Sorry I haven’t posted anything in a while, since the wife had an accident and hurt her rotator cuff and broke a bone in her foot. So, I was doing double duty as caretaker. I finally got some work done and finished my howitzer, although it needs some tweaking. I also finished the ammo rounds, boxes and scratch built the aiming stakes, although I might change the boxes. Also, I primed the base and I’m putting down some PSP (scratch built or online) on the ground for the mud. Enjoy the pics and all comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.
Sorry to hear about your wifes issues. I assume she’s on the mend if you’re back at the bench. Howitzer looks good. I like the revetment as well. Is that a Verlinden piece?
Bummer about the wife’s bones, luckily you’re there to help out.
Thanks for the kind words. BTW, the base is a Verlinden piece.
Great looking howitzer! Sorry to hear about your wife accident. Hope that she has a painless and speedy recovery.
Howitzer, shells, boxes, aiming stakes, and figures all look great. The whole scene should look excellent. Can’t wait to see it all together.
“King of Battle!!”
I’m thinking of scratch building the ammo crates along with a fuse box. I’m not too crazy about the ammo boxes that came with the kit.
The ‘bones’ of that old 105 kit are pretty good. I’m surprised no one has made a PE upgrade so that the shield does not look to be 2" thick to suit plastic moulding.
The tops of the rails for the slide ought be a shiny steel, but dark–so a #2 pencil rubbed along them can be just the ticket. The moving part of the breech block ought also be a dark steel, and a pencil highlighting the corners can be very effective.
This is shaping up to be a great build.
What model kit it this? I myself have been trying to find some Vietnam era soldiers
You’re right on the fact that I built an Academy Pak 40 anti tank gun with PE shields, but I haven’t found anything for these great towed howitzers and the figures offered is also lacking. As for the rail slides and the breech block are in constant use in a war zone so the brighter steel colors for me are appropriate. I did paint the side of the breech block the color of the howitzer. Thanks.
This is Italeri’s 105mm Howitzer M101.
Hello everyone. I finally finished my scratch-built ammo boxes, and I added a fuse box too.
I didn’t particularly like Italeri’s ammo boxes, since they were more WWII types. Now I can concentrate on painting my base. Enjoy the pic and as always, all comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.
Your figure work/painting is fantastic! Do you favor acrylics or oil paints for your figure painting?
Thank you MTS. I mostly work with Tamiya & Model Master acrylics when doing figures. Rarely I might need to use enamel or oil paints.
