The Forgotten War GB (6/25/08 - 2/28/09) - Deadline Extended Yet Again!

SQUADRON shows them instock for $10.80. It is PART 2. Also I forgot to say the HASE kit already has the slotted wing…Harv

It seems like a nice excuse for me to build a Gabby’s Sabre [:)], however I may ask you gebtlemen for some help. Seing so many Sabres on a list I hope you will know the answer to my question.

There was a Sabre F-86E-10 with name "GABBY"on a port side.

What would be a kit available for this aircraft and decals , all in 1/48 scale ?? Any hope ???

Greg, I googled it and all I could find is at saber-pilots.org Try that. It talks about changes made and such but has no refferances to any spacific aircraft. If I find more, I`ll post Sorry…Harv

Wow. That is SHARP! [#toast] Did you go paint or foil for the NMF? And who’s decals did you end up using?

Someone Dirtball asked if I would consider the 1/32 Kinetic Sabre…no, but just because I don’t build in 1/32. HOWEVER, I do have a 1/48 Kinetic F-84 on order currently - that suitable? [;)]

How about a Korean War Academy 1/48th Vaught F4U-4?

Tom [C):-)]

Charles,

I might like to join but it would particularly lighten my load if I could enter my partially started F7F Tigercat (roughly 10% done) that I’m doing for the Grumman Iron Works GB. It will not get any more work done on it before the start date as I’m leaving on a southeastern US tour, er, vacation, next week and will not be back until just about the start date.

Otherwise I’ll have to check my stash and see what fits … maybe a Bearcat, maybe an F-84 …

oh I love this idea, since I have always been a fan of Korea as the “Forgotten War” (Had 4 uncles and 2 cousins serve in it, one of them did not come back, young lad of 22).

of course I am absolutelly swamped and behind my ongoing GBs… TENTATIVELY I can put together the old Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog and I also have the old monogram “century series” super sable. Um…

Hey mucker,

Please put me in for a 1/72 Hase F9F-2 Panther. I plan to do it as the F9F-3 that made the Navy’s first jet kill of the war. That will provide some history for the completion blurb. I signed up for the Mud Movers GB with a Skyraider, but he’s not allowing crossovers so I’ll go with the Panther here for now. I’ve already put a history blurb over there if you’d like to check it out.

Should I manage to complete these two, I have a number of other eligible kits I might try here, but first things first.

Thanks

Dick

Greg:

There is not a kit in 1/48 with an unmodified E wing, or in any other scale for that matter. I have been mapping the wings on an F-86F-20 with the 6-3 hard wing mod and an F-86L, which has the 6-3 slatted wing with the 1 foot tip extensions, dimensionally the same as an F-86F-40. Photos are the only reliable method of determining the wing for a Sabre. Some E’s in Korea got the 6-3 hard wing mod, so it depends on time frame too.

What I plan to do is combine the wing from a Pro-Modeler F-86D with the Academy F-86F to get an E, so far it looks do-able. I believe the F-86D kit has the most accurate wing for a Sabre of the available models, and it has separate slats. I believe the sweepback and root chord of the Academy kit to be considerably off, and will be posting some comparative photos and drawings I have made of the wings at the McClellan Museum. I wish there was an unmodifed E or D near me to also photo and measure. There are drawings for the Sabre from North American, but they generate more questions than answers in my mind.

Someone asked if F-100’s, and another F-86D’s got to Korea. The Hun was too late, and so was the D, and like the 2 seat Voodoos, F-89’s, and F-94C’s, F-86D’s were only used stateside with ADC. F-94B’s did work in Korea, and don’t forget the F3D-2, it also was there.

Harv, I too would like to know the source of the Risner decals you have in 1/32.

Here is a list I compiled from articles about Korea in the first 4 volumes of Wings of Fame. There are undoubtedly others, and many of the North Korean types were used in only minor roles, the main aircraft being the MiG-15, Po-2, AND Tu-2:

Last, for Greg here is artwork for “Gabbie” from the same article:

John, check the last post on page 1. Squadren has them…Harv

Thanks, Harv. I’ll take a look to see how they compare to the ones I drew…hope mine are better[:)]

The Hasegawa 1/32 kit is an F-40 wing, which has the 6-3 chord extension, slats, and the 1 foot tip extension, so it needs some work to make an E from it. It’s a great kit, I have about 4 of them. The Kinetic kit is not bad, it is a hard 6-3 wing short wing. Good for the late Korean War period.

Edit: I looked, Harv, and did not see Risner’s airplane on sheet 2 or Sheet 3, Eagle Strike. Perhaps you are referring to 1/32 Sabre Korean War decals in general?

John,

Thanks a lot for your post. Excelent info. I already started my research on Sabres, but it is a logn way for me :). Already have a rare kit in my posession : F-86H all resin kit. It waits for me to build in 141 ANG colors [:)]. It looks I will be pulling your brain a bit here [:)]

Once again: Thanks a lot for such great help and expertise !

I have a Corsair but its for another GB I don’t like to cross over much but, I may find something in the mean time.[:)]

John, Im sorry. I thought Mucker was refering to Fishers PAPER TIGER decals. Must of had a brain f*rt or something. Ive done some searching and I cant find what your looking for either. Sorry my friend…Harv

With all the BMF finishes that are going to be shown here, will anybody be handing out sunglasses…[8D]

Dupes…thanks. It is Alclad II Polished Aluminum. I really like this stuff.

I also have the Kinetic F-84F…looks to be a nice kit but I’ve not gotten to it yet. From what I know, the swept wing “F” variant did not make it into the war. The “E” and “G” versions did, however and both the Tamiya and Revell/Monogram kits are very nice.

On a side note, there is a Cold War GB for which the F-84F would be very applicable.

Too cool. I’d love to find that kit, Greg…someday I hope to build an “H” variant

Tom, Steven, JMart and Dick:

Welcome, welcome! This is quickly becoming an all-star studded cast.

Tom: I love those deep dark blue Corsairs from Korea…can’t wait to see your build.

Steven: Your Tigercat would be a welcome addition. That has got to be one of Grumman’s coolest designs (uh-oh…have I just opened a can of worms?)

JMart: Alright! Armor! I was hopeing to get a well rounded GB. THanks you for joining. Now if we can just get Dupes to add some more armor…

Dick: Excellent choice of kits. You’re welcome to enter an many builds as you can fit in. Looking forward to your Panther!

John and Mucker. This is the mod I was talking about to change a -40 back to a -10 wing. Its the only major mod needed. Just remove center piece and glue tip to wing. Hope this helps. Also it is the same for any scale…Harv

No problem Harv. It happens to me all the time, especially when I say what I think is true most forcefully. I’m trying not to do that so often myself…

On the wing thing, there is a much more difficult problem to deal with on the Hasegawa kit to make it a factory -10 wing. You will see that at the wing root leading edge there is a small triangle, and that the wing leading edge overlaps the ammunition compartment door. That indicates a 6-3 wing, and with the -10 wing it is not there. For a -10 wing, you need to remove a section of wing at the piano hinge panel line about 10% back from the leading edge, a scale 6 inches at the root and 3 inches at the tip. The other way to cheat is to not do that and move the panel line for the ammunition box door forward, and remove the panel line for that triangular section on the wing. The 6-3 mod was fairly simple to do in the field because the entire leading edge of the wing was replaced simply by pulling out the hinge wires on the top and bottom of the wing and installing the new leading edge by the same method. A fairing was added to the ammunition box door to mate up the the new forward location of the wing root, and that triangular section was quickly removable so the door could still be opened.

Beechcraft used the same wing assembly method on all of the Bonanzas, Barons, and King Airs.
