The first posting of my work. USMC circa 1945

This is the first time posting pics of anything I’ve done. As usual comments, corrections, and curses are welcome.[:)]

Warriors 120mm Vallejo acrylic shaded with oils.

Enjoy!

Looks great to me. On the strap in the first picture, is there some excess material right at the front edge of the knee?

Absolutley outstanding painting! A big [tup]!!!

Excellent paint work…

Thank you all for the comments. After seeing all the superb works posted here I was apprehensive. [:I]

Aj: yes there is. The last thing I did was attach the sling as it had to be flexed a bit to fit between the swivels. It was painted and the molding flaw escaped these old eyes until just before I mounted it. I was really happy with everything else and unless you REALLY look, read see a enlarged photo, it’s not so apparent. [censored] it, I called it good.

excellent work indeed

That’s phenominal by any measure.

Might could use a soft pencil (B or F) and highlight the gas cylinder on the Garand. That tube was stainless, and finish rubbed right off after a bit. “Shiny” never looks quite right, but a hint of bare metal “peeking through” can be just right.

CapnMac82, Thank you, sounds like a plan with the gas tube.

I might be old but the M1 was not in the inventory during my two hitches. I have several other figures to do tracing the Corps history from the beginning to beyond the present. Most are carrying the “finest battle instrument ever devised”.

Awesome job! One little nit-pick, and I am sure it is no fault of yours, but the Garand buttstock looks too short. Possibly just me, but…

Funny you should mention that. Looking at the photos I realized the butt has no definable butt plate. I’m not going to mess with this one fearing in my clumsiness I’ll dork it up somehow. I think that’s what gives the illusion of the stock being too short. I have a recent Springfield Armory catalog and the photo’s of their M1 look spot on in comparisonwith this one. Wish I could afford one of theirs!

Looks great, Wayne!!! And I’m with ya on the M1, I too would love to own one.

AgentG,

Excellent work!

What ever you do, DO NOT purchase that Newly manufactured M1 Garand! Those things are over priced and I’ve seen quite a few of them being sent back to the manufacturer due to problems (I worked as a firearms instructor/range safety officer at a local town run range for about 8 years). Besides, why would you want to purchase a clone when you can have the REAL DEAL at fraction of cost?

You can actually purchase one from the U.S. Government directly at fairly decent price. I have collection of M1 Garands and most of them were purchased through CMP (www.odcmp.com) and those are in excellent condition.

Definite “cadillac” compared to some out there.

And, for modeling, theirs actually have too high a grade of walnut for the stock too. Parkerizing is far too even, too. A bit like that outfit that was rebuilding M1 Carbines (and Johnsons, and other nifty items) ans shipped them in a cratewith FMs and the works. Almost too pretty to shoot.

When you get around to KW Marines, the M-1s often had shiny gas tubes from having been barracks-pollished so many times (it’s a detail that’s striking in contemporary photos once you start to look for it). I want to remember that black paint was often field-applied to correct that. Which would be one of those modeling condundra–if you do that, you run the risk of looking like a bad modeler, but if you don’t you run the risk of not being “period.”

I’d be afraid to model up the M-1 I qualified with, it was a 1953 I-H rebarreled to 7.62x51 with an un-stained birch stock and a completely random mix of stamped and milled parts on board. No two metalic parts had the same finish; and that gas tube might have as well be chromed. Sights were sweet, though, and tuned right in to that barrel.

WOW[bow][tup]

If I remember correctly my M16 in boot was made by GM’s turbo hydromatic Div. The M14 I used on the rifle team was accurized by the boys from Quantico. An amazing array of parts that shot better than I could ever hope too! I hear ya about the sights, mine were just right.[:)]

Very nice job Wayne. Looks really sweet, especially the camo. 10 out of 10.
